Anyone else see the WNEM report last night about the union? www.wnem.com/story/25962383/junior-hockey-league-players-could-unionizeNo comment from the team. If this goes into effect, I could see major problems for the league. Dues, licensing, discipline. Would players demand more than $50 a week? How many teams could afford that, since many operate within tight constraints. Free agency??? I know this was a sort of joke topic last year, but now there is a more legit backer.

If a CHLPA ever actually forms, I would hope that Glenn Gumbley has nothing to do with it, if that's even possible. Based on his behavior on Twitter, he seems incredibly arrogant and unprofessional. The whole idea and Gumbley himself are essentially perceived as a joke by the Canadian media.
Personally I don't think it will ever happen, despite the apparent new-found support.

he seems incredibly arrogant and unprofessional. I don't know if you're new to unions but that's the primary characteristic they're looking for in a Business Agent or Representative. There are some good guys on there in Union Leadership but when you're at the bargaining table, arrogant and unprofessional is typically the trait you'll see across from you.

Perhaps so, but to me, I guess if I were a parent with a son playing in the CHL, I don't think he's the guy I'd want representing my child. Again, could just be me.

I totally agree with you but the union isn't going to supplant the agents, managers and/or parents. The way that most labor unions work is that they protect ALL workers equally regardless of performance. Unions typically do more to protect the low person on the totem pole than help to get rewards for the people at the top. In sports, they'll bargain for compensation as a whole (such as a salary cap and max/minimum payments) and then the teams still have say over who gets paid what. They'll try to negotiate things like a longer Christmas break or something like that and then maybe some player safety requirements or some insurance or something like that. There's not really a lot for them to do for these kids which is why the union has never gained traction. As far as "representing" goes, whenever something goes wrong (player suspension, injury, death) the union will be out front blasting the team and the league. It's still going to be the agent, manager, or parent that does the talking with the team or league but the media will get the quotes from the union because they'll be the only ones willing to talk and it will make everything seem doom and gloom and we'll come on this board and rumors will fly all over the place because of what the union said (even if it's total bs). I don't think the union will be allowed to come in because I think the league will be treated as "amateurs with a stipend" rather than professionals/employees so all of this may be moot but just like the college sports unionization, this will be interesting to watch what happens.

The league has already doubled the stipend (approximately). They claim it has nothing to do with the union situation. Right. Gumbley appalled pretty much every one in the world with his tweets at the time of Trafford's death, in essence claiming that the situation proved why players needed a union. I would want someone aggressive fighting for my kid, but I'd also want someone who showed at least some sign of being a decent human being.
