Today, the Red Wings signed Tom McCollum to a 1 year deal, giving them Howard, Gustavsson, Mrazek, McCollum, and Coreau in the system, all ahead of Paterson. Would the Wings return him to Saginaw? They did that with McCollum when he was an overager.
If he is returned, what would you do with him?

Well seeing as our past history dictates we trade for an overage goalie, if he is returned, I think we should keep him and play him about 75% of the games. He'll probably end up as the backup or third in Toledo though.

The Wings have already said they plan on Jake being in Toledo this season.

I expect Jake and Coreau will spend this season fighting each other for the top spot in Toledo. That means they are also fighting for the back up spot in Grand Rapids next year. My guess is that both goalies will get plenty of opportunity to prove themselves. Nothing new for these two as they have been head to head now since last years rookie camp.

I think Toledo signs a #1 with Coreau the back up

So the Wings think he'll benefit more backing up in the ECHL then leading a team in the OHL? That, just like re-signing Dan Cleary, is ridiculous. And it shows why Detroit is no longer a destination for free agents. Jake would be better served playing an OA year in the OHL.

My prediction...Jake will be in the OHL next season but NOT with the Spirit.

Interesting thought, don. I tend to agree with you. When they Wings said "Toledo", I read that as "not Grand Rapids".

Interesting thought, don. I tend to agree with you. When they Wings said "Toledo", I read that as "not Grand Rapids". Ya, they've got too many above him in the system for Jake to make Grand Rapids this year. Granted, he could do amazing in a camp and make the Ownership have to think about it but guys are under contract for a reason and they're going to be ahead of him on the totem pole. While we haven't had as many years in Saginaw as other OHL teams, I just have never seen someone with the talent of Paterson (despite how last season went) been stuck in the ECHL by their NHL club vs. playing in the OHL especially a goalie. I'm sure there's examples but I can't see Jake going to the ECHL next year. Also, playing for another team goes along with my prediction that we're not going to be very good and I think having Jake on our team will be a waste of time and either the Wings or the Spirit will want him out of town playing for a contender and we should be able to get good value for him.

I think it is in our best interests to trade Jake IF he does get returned (the Wings like their prospects over-ripe so more action in the O then in the E) plus as a team Canada goalie, he would have TONS of trade value.
My fear is the "non" hockey side of the business gets in the way. If we aren't going to be very good, they will perceive Jake, the Red Wings draft pick, as a marketing piece to try and help attendance.

Very interesting and a good point. Thats why you have hockey people run the team I believe.

I can say with 100% confidence that Jake will not be kept around as a "marketing tool". If Jake plays for Saginaw this year it will be for one of two reasons (1) We tear it up in the first month of the season and look like we can really do some damage this year or (2) The trade value for Jake wasn't anywhere close to good enough to let him go.
As I've said before, I think #1 has no chance in h-e double hockey sticks of happening and with #2, we may end up just taking the crappy deal to get something.
Jake Paterson (even though he's a Wings pick) is not going to bring people into the building to watch because he's a goalie. You may get 10 people a game who are there to see him because he's a Wings pick but that's nothing in a 5000 seat arena. The only person I've known to be a real draw for the Spirit was Telegin. I can't tell you how many people at the arena would ask "who's the Russian Bull". Saad also was a good draw but he was not marketed like Telegin was.
