Honestly, I think this would be a good time to send a message to him, and all future draft picks. Let him sit! Don't move him, don't let him be the one in control. Let them sit and never see a game in the OHL!

As much as I agree with you SGF, we need him or what he can bring us in a trade as soon as possible. We need talent badly....

I want to see guys who have the desire and passion to put on that Saginaw Spirit sweater and play in this city. And if Felhaber doesn't want to play here, than deal his rights to a team that will give this franchise a bounty that they can hopefully build from.
I was also wondering if players who refuse to play for the OHL teams that draft them put up red flags down the road to NHL teams also. For example Eric Lindros refusing to play for Sault Ste. Marie, then not wanting to play for the Quebec Nordiques when he was drafted by the NHL.

What can we get for him that's going to impact our team immediately? Anything we get is going to be a castoff or somebody that doesn't want to play where they're at now. I say we let him sit and collect the additional first round pick next year which is better than anything we get for this year and it sends a message to any and all picks that try to hold teams that draft them hostage. If you don't want to play for the team that thought you were worthy of being picked where you were then fine don't play anywhere.

We only get the first round pick if we trade him. If we let him sit, we get nothing....
I read somewhere that there are still 7 first round picks that are not signed. Maybe one of the other 6 would play here and we can swap Tye to that team for their first round pick then both the Spirit and that team would get another pick next year too...

I believe (not 100% sure so dont quote me) you can actually declare him defective, get the first round pick and not trade him. You just lose his OHL rights. He would have to sit this year and go through the draft process again the next year.

Just a few points if I may: It's only July, nothing about the team is really set yet. Just because the kid says he's not coming it does not mean he's not coming. Just because Jim P says he doesn't want to trade him it doesn't mean he won't trade him. And trust me when I tell you this, the Spirit team this year is going to be way better than most folks give them credit for. With, or without the kid.

1) The notion that we should send a message by "letting him sit," is ridiculous. He won't be sitting anywhere this season. If he doesn't play for us and we don't trade him, he'll play in a lower league, sign on with a NCAA team and we'll never see him. And you know what we'll get for him in that case? Nothing. The only message we'll send in that case is that we don't do very well with asset management.
2) As much as fans hate it when a 16 year old kid basically decides what team he will play for, at the OHL level hockey, for better or worse, is a business. Players can/do exercise their right to put themselves in the best position possible to further their careers. If I had a son, I'd tell him to play for whatever team took him, but I'm not gonna look down on him too much cause he doesn't want to come to Saginaw. It's a business move.
PS: If he doesn't like Saginaw, I here Sudbury is lovely in the middle of January.
