That means that De Sousa passed through waivers, so in other words, no OHL team wanted him. Therefore, they weren't going to get anything in a trade.
This whole cut and picked up by the QMJHL thing had me intrigued, so I did a little research.
Nathan Glass had 9 points in 43 games in Saginaw, then Saginaw cut him last year and he went to Sherbrooke of the QMJHL, where he had 7 points in 28 games. Assuming his rate of production in Saginaw, if he played 28 more games, he would have had 6 points, so he produced roughly the same. Meaning, he got an opportunity somewhere else but didn't pick up his production any more than he had here.
David Perklin had 6 points in 74 games in Saginaw, then Saginaw cut him last year and he went to Shawinigan of the QMJHL, where he had 3 points in 17 games. Assuming his rate of production in Saginaw, if he played 17 more games, he would have had 1 point, so he perhaps picked it up a little, but come on, 1 vs. 3 points? In theory, he got an opportunity somewhere else but didn't produce any more. This year, Perklin is in Georgetown of the OJHL.
The argument is that the player isn't playing because he hasn't earned the playing time, while the other argument is that the player would respond if they were only shown a little faith. My point is that they go somewhere else, and they are given an opportunity, but they produce the same as they would if they remained here. Also, they fall through to be picked up by the Q because no one in the OHL sees this untapped value either.
De Sousa is perhaps a different story. He has 13 points in 39 games in Saginaw, and if given an opportunity to play 60 games this year (that is the max he can play with Gatineau I think), and if he produces at the same rate as he did last year in Saginaw, he could put up 20 points assuming no improvement in his game, which can be a tidy point total for a 3rd pair defenseman. Last year, Callaghan, Ringuette, and Prophet all had 19 points. The other side of that one is that he will wear out his welcome and won't get to play in 60 games. I'll keep an eye on De Sousa to see what he does, because it will be interesting.
