New ratings from NHL central scouting today. So I thought I'd start a thread for general talk about the upcoming draft. Just talk about possible Spirit players getting draft, OHL draft elligibles, CHL, Europe, College, whatever. Always fun to talk about the draft. Anyway: Stephens rated a B prospect. Holmes, Crawford, and Artemov get C ratings. Spirit prospect Jackson Bales also gets a C rating playing with Oakville this year. www.nhl.com/ice/m_news.htm?id=739668Couple quick thoughts as far as OHL guys go: 1) Orban not listed. Thought he's been better then Holmes 2) Speers, Schemitsch both listed as C's. I have both in my top ten OHL draft elligibles. 3) Lawson Crouse as an A. I'm not as sold on his as everyone else is. 4) Good to see Addison listed. Seems to be adapting well in Ottawa and putting up numbers at about the pace I was expecting from him this year.

Orban will be on the list by the end of the year if he continues to play as well as he has.

The U-M commit you mentioned doesn't need the OHL in order to boost his draft status. Arguably Saad did, but this kid doesn't. So why go to the OHL? I once tried to explain this to Spitfire fans who were upset that they couldn't get Al Montoya to go to Windsor. Montoya was drafted #6 overall. Going to the Spits wouldn't have changed that.

I agree that Kyle Connor doesn't need to come to the OHL to boost his draft status. I would just like to see some of these highly touted draft picks that Saginaw has the rights to come to the Spirit like they do for other franchises. It seems teams like London and Plymouth amongst others are able to convince these players to come to the OHL and back out of their NCAA commitments. The last marquee player to back out of his NCAA commitment and come to Saginaw in my recent memory is Jamie Olesiak who left Northeastern University after being drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 1st round.

Getting a player to come here after the draft is a whole different story. It depends on who drafts the player, because some NHL teams want their player to develop in junior, and sometimes it depends on the player getting leverage by starting his sticking clock sooner by leaving the college, forcing his NHL team to make a decision sooner on signing him.
In other words, we will probably have to wait until after the player is drafted. The downside to that is that such a player could be called up from the Spirit to the AHL, because they wouldn't be under the same restrictions as players drafted out of the CHL.

A little late to posting this, but ICYMI Brock Otten made a consensus top ten for OHL players for this year's draft based on input from scouts and members of the media. If you don't know who this guy is, I highly suggest you follow him and check out his site when he updates it. Lot's of good information about NHL draft prospects every year from him if you're into that kind of thing. Stephens gets a few votes and makes honourable mention. ohlprospects.blogspot.ca/2014/11/preliminary-mediascout-top-10-for-2015.html?m=1
