Decided to start this thread up since a deep playoff run is not in the picture and we're now about a month away from the OHL draft taking place. Saginaw is gonna be picking around the 4 or 5 spot depending on how these last games go. So we will have a chance to add a rookie who will have an impact next year. As always, there is a good discussion on HFBoards about the draft every year: hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=1842659IMO We SHOULD be looking at drafting a defenseman but Paliafito has always been a BPA guy. If it was me I'd be targeting Hayden Davis. If he's gone, maybe try for Ian Blacker if you believe his commitment to the NCAA isn't very strong. Markus Phillips might be a reach where we're picking but I'd still take him over a forward at this point. Early thoughts? D, F, or BPA?

I heard somewhere that there are 5 big impact guys available, so the 4 teams out of the playoffs plus the worst team in the playoffs will get someone really good. Here's hoping we are #5 -- the only problem is that two other teams in our division will also get one of these impact guys.

Really depends how the 3 or 4 picks ahead of us play out. One has to assume Flint and Missy are going to be tempted to take Vilardei and McLeod to appease their families. Not a given however.
That leaves Sudbury at one who I assume take Levin or Tippett whoever will report with Levin slightly ahead. They can't afford to take someone who won't report as their comp pick in 2016 would be 6th. Turning #1 overall into #6 overall would be a career ender for their management/ownership (although Sudbury fans may appreciate that).
That means if we pick 4 I say we go either Tippett or Levin whomever is left. They both play wing and that spot on a high line will be needed after Sadowy leaves either at next trade deadline or off season.Plus the talent level of Levin and Tippett are slightly above Davis.
If we pick 5, if both the above are off the board (I assume they will be unless Windsor takes a shot at farrace or blacker) Davis is a no brainer. Blacker reporting to Saginaw is slim to none I assume or I prefer him to Davis.
Worst case for Saginaw is if the draft plays out like this
SUD-LEVIN FLINT-VILARDI MISSY-DAVIS WIND-TIPPETT
Then I assume we would take a look at McLeod (reporting issue and maybe a slight reach), Phillips (reach) or a small forward from Ottawa whose name is escaping me at the moment. Really got to hope Missy reaches for the 3rd McLeod

I think we should take a forward. All of our young defensemen are gaining experience which will make them better. We also have a huge stockpile of draft picks now and I think that it's easier (chemistry-wise) to trade for a top defenseman than a forward when it comes time to do that.

See I'm of the mindset that it's much easier to get a quality forward after the first round/through a trade than it is to get a quality defenseman in the same manner. At this level the talent of defenseman drops off pretty quickly after the first IMO. I'd rather us reach and get a good D man and using other picks on forwards vs using the first round pick on a forward with obviously more talent. I just don't think the quality holds up later on. Side note: Re FreelandSpirit, the guy you're thinking of is Greg Meireles.

Saginaw is in the playoffs so looks like 5 or 6 pick likely.
Assuming that Tippet, Levin, McLeod, and Vilardi are the first four gone, that would leave Miereles at forward if we wanted to go that way or Davis/Phillips at D. My guess is one of those three is gonna be our pick.

I also wouldn't rule out Brady Gilmour or Vanya Lodina. Gilmour could be a future capitan and Lodina seems like someone our team would take.

Heard Kissel say on the radio last night, they have a 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, and a high 4th. so they have 7 of about the first 65 or so picks.

With three 3rd round draft picks, I believe they will draft Michael Pastujov, with one of those 3rd round picks. Pastujov is a player that is projected to be a top 5 draft pick but has committed to the University of Michigan. Saginaw has already drafted his brother Nick Pastujov, so I think they would want to own the rights to both players. From everything I have read, the Pastujov Brothers are extremely talented hockey players but both are committed to playing for the University of Michigan. www.sbncollegehockey.com/college-hockey-recruiting-ncaa/2014/7/23/5931825/nick-pastujov-commits-to-michigan

Why use a 3rd rounder on a player that won't come? If the only reason why they might think of coming is if they can play on the same team together, then it would be just as good a tactic to let another team draft Michael, to keep them both out of the OHL so Michael won't play for another team against ours.

If we only had 1 3rd rounder, then yeah, I agree with you. But with mutiple 3rds and not a lot of open roster space, why not use one on the other Pastujov? You can still add to the prospect pool AND take a shot on a flyer at the same time.

If I've looked at the final standings correctly, Saginaw will have the 6th overall pick.
1) Sudbury 2) Windsor 3) Flint 4) Mississauga 5) Peterborough 6) Saginaw
Flint and Mississauga have the same number of points and win percentage, but Mississauga has more regulation wins, which I would assume get them a lower pick? Peterborough is the 8th seed in the East playoffs, but had five less points than Saginaw finished with. Anyone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct. With there little run at the end of the season Saginaw jumped from 5th pick to 6th pick. Here is a list of the teams currently held picks in the first 4 rounds of the OHL draft. Overalls were added by me and may not be correct. Hope our scouts have been busy.
Sag 1st 6th Overall SAR 2nd 30th Overall NB 2nd 38th Overall MIS 3rd 46th Overall Sag 3rd 48th Overall KIT 3rd 52nd Overall WSR 4th 64th Overall

Between those picks, picks from the last 2 drafts, borderline players on the roster this year and limited roster space, it's gonna be a VERY competive training camp next year.
