The import draft was today and Saginaw selected 18th and with that pick we took big Finnish defenseman Markus Niemelainen.
Going forward a blue line of
Dito-Middleton Petschenig-Stewart Proner-Niemelainen Crawford
That's a big big mean defense. This surely has to mean that guys like Holmes and Henley are done here an will be moved.

Actually seen a scout today say that our import pick reminds him of Middleton more than anyone else in the 2016 draft class. I'll gladly take two kids who play like that.

It seems now like Holmes, Henley, and Stewart are fighting for one spot, but remember -- this team usually does something I find irritating and they keep 8 defencemen on the regular roster. So there could be two spots still for those 3 guys to fight for, although I doubt that any of them would like being scratched with regularity, so I would assume there is a trade in our future involving Holmes or Henley.
Plus I think this means we must have cut Kodola while getting nothing in return. I really hate the import draft rules. Next year, we will hopefully have done so well that we will pass our pick to keep Artemov, and it won't be a big deal to pass our pick because it will be so far down. But then the following year, we will use our pick, but it will probably be a low one too. TEAMS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO TRADE THEIR IMPORT PICK.

If you pick an import player do you have to have them report? Can they play for their current (or another team) and then report the following year? Not saying to do so in this case just wondering for future.

I don't believe you can. Unless you hold thier rights as one of your 2 import slots. The only way you can have more that 2 import players rights is if one of them is a 1st round nhl draft pick. I.e Sarnia they have Zacha but we're still able to make 2 selections. Will have to release one before the season.
