OH BOY, we got a great deal. Good ole Edwards worked his magic. NOT!!! HA HA HA. Actually, getting a 2nd round pick is pretty impressive!!! And to get an additional 5th to go with it is pretty darn good, imo! There have been a lot of posts regarding what an OA player is "worth" & there were some pretty good examples of players who fetched nothing more than a 5th round pick or later! So to snag a 2nd round pick seems like a great deal to me! Granted, it won't help us this year or next, but hopefuly someday we will look back & this & say "We only had to give up Asselin for this pick?"!!! I also do not think Edwards is done dealing, since we have an open OA spot now. Perhaps we land a decent OA for that 5th rounder & then we basically traded Asselin for THAT player, & STILL have an extra 2nd rounder! I like the deal - for the future.

Right now I call it an average deal, thumbs slightly up. I REALLY like getting a 2nd round pick, because Oshawa probably won't have as good of a team by then with Tavares gone by then, so it could be a very good draft position. Hopefully we have an OA player come aboard soon.

i would have liked to see a fisticuffer (new word, webster's take note) included in the deal but i think that this is pretty good for the Spirit. I thought I read on the NOOB that the "precedent" going rate for OA's was a 6th rounder. To snake a 2nd rounder is pretty good even if we just use it for another trade down the line. One thumbs up and one to the side for this deal.

I'll give it a thumbs up with some reservation. In a perfect scenario I would have liked to see a good up-and-coming 16 or 17 yr old player rather than a 2nd round draft pick that far in the future but that is being a bit picky. I say this because I see the making of another strong team in 2 years with Comrie, Brodie, Crawford on D and Szwarz, Murovich, and hopefully Pachis on Offense. Also, with the young goalie, Joe Lapera, and the two european picks next season make this team very good in 2008/2009. The 2009 2nd rounder is too far removed to help this next group and picks are hard to predict. But overall, to get a 2nd and a 5th for what was a 2nd round OA is good. Maybe SGF will be right on and the picks will result in the player we want next season in trade.

Actually the going rate for over-agers has been in the 3rd round pick area for the last few years. This being for trades made prior to the November cut down date. The later in the year the trades are made, the lower the value since overagers can't play next season. Fewer games, lesser value. Simple if you think about it. The good news here is that the 5th round 2008 pick is Kingston's and not Oshawa's so that will be early in the 5th round. The 2nd round '09 pick is Oshawa's but will most likely be later in the round as Oshawa should be strong next season as well unless Tavares chooses to play in Europe. For all of you folks that were hoping to get a player in return, well, there really wasn't much chance of that. Trades involving overage players almost always involve picks going the other way. Now that doesn't mean that you can't use those picks to pick up a player this season. Only time will tell if Edwards want's to do that. This team is very capable of playing well without Asselin in the lineup. (case in point, Saturday's win against the Soo) Even though Saginaw has an overage spot open now, they don't have to fill it. I sure wouldn't sell the farm to do it. This looks to me to be the kind of deal that all parties involved can get behind. Good luck in Oshawa Patrick.

Isn't the slim down date for OA's in two days? If I remember correctly, by Nov 15th, teams have to be down to 4 OA's on their rosters. Please correct me if I am in error.
That means that the Spirit could have their pick of alot of OA's from all over the W, Q & O that are cast off their old teams.
