Well, it's going to be an interesting one emotionally tonight as we kick off the excitement of year 22 of Spirit hockey but also close out the excitement of the Memorial Cup with the banner raising. It has been quite the summer of celebration but after tonight, that chapter is over and we see what this group of players have in store for us. I think this season is going to be the old WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) because we're not going to have much flexibility after building the championship team last year. Unless London's players all stay up in the pros, they are going to be the juggernaut and easily the favorites to win the West so Drinkell will have to decide what he's going to do with some of our players who would potentially get a big return at the deadline. I think we're going to be able to put a really good product on the ice this year but what is our ceiling? Regardless, I'm excited to see the banner go up tonight and excited to see what this group of guys can do!

Zayne Parekh and Ethan Hay still away at NHL training camps. Sounds like Lincoln Moore and Dimian Zhilkin are nursing injuries according to what Dillon Clark said near the end of the final preseason game on Sunday.

I'm a little surprised that the team hasn't announced the leadership positions yet...maybe they were waiting for Hay to be officially sent back but based on the preseason action, it sure sounds like he'll be wearing the C this season and I think that's a good decision. Lots of people wore the A in the preseason so maybe all of the decisions haven't been made yet. My guesses: Hay (C), Mangone (A), Willis (A), Sima (A).

When is the last time Saginaw had no imports in their lineup? With Chernyshov out with an injury, the Spirit will have no imports in the lineup tonight and for the foreseeable future.

Kind of hoping we take a swing at Ondrej Molnar from Erie. Misiak just got returned and they already have a goalie signed. Otters are at 3 imports atm. I know we need D but there really aren't any import D available. Maximize that last import spot for cheap. Help shore up the top 6 until Chernyshov comes in.

We open the season with a 5-4 OT loss to Windsor. Ethan Hay made it back in time (which honestly surprised me), but no Zayne Parekh and no Liam Greentree for Windsor. Showed some good offensive punch, but as we all expected, the defense will be a work in progress. I hope Zayne has worked on his conditioning over the summer, because he won't be coming off the ice much when he gets back. I thought pretty much all of Windsor's goals came of the "garbage" variety, but they all count the same. Gotta try to clean up the rebounds.
Funny how Misa scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game, but couldn't complete the hat trick. He did the same thing last year in Kitchener on opening night. He looks better than ever. Coulda had a couple more, too.

Yeah aren't going to have a ton of W's giving up 3 PP goals. That will get cleaned up. Night one/first couple weeks are always works in progress. Good to see Guo and Clouthier carry over their nice preseasons into opening night.

Stupid retaliation penalties and no net front defense hurt. Hopefully that changes. Sarnia had some fights in preseason with London, so might look to get us to retaliate. We don't have that type of team that can shut down a power play.

Parekh was not listed as part of Calgary's cuts today, so Saginaw is likely without him for tomorrow's game in the Soo, I imagine.

Just checked the on line scoresheet on the OHL website. Zayne Parekh not in the lineup tonight at Sault Ste Marie. No big surprise. Hopefully we see him tomorrow night at home vs Sarnia.

Spirit beat Sault Ste Marie 6-4 last night on the road. Michael Misa finally gets his 1st OHL hat trick with a natural hatty in the 1st period. Epperson with his 1st OHL goal and added 2 assists. A little concerning is jumping out to a 4-0 lead after 1 period then falling asleep in the 2nd period to let the Hounds get back in the game. They scored twice to make it 4-2 heading into the 3rd period. Saginaw scored early in the 3rd period to make it 5-2 but let the Soo hang around as they cut the lead to 5-3. A Will Bishop empty net goal made it 6-3 but then the Spirit gave up a late goal to make it 6-4.
