Final score tonight was 7-5. Either the Hounds got really bored in the 3rd or Saginaw played well to make the score look somewhat respectable.
3359 on hand for the home opener....ouch.

Soo wins it 7-5. Looks like it was too little, too late for Saginaw. How did the Breen-Livingston fight go in the 3rd period?? Good start for Ryan McDonough getting 2 goals and 3rd star. The OHL online scoresheet shows Jan Mursak in the Saginaw line up. Is he back from Red Wings camp?? Must be an error, right?? www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=14458

The Breen fight was kind of weak...from my angle it didn't look like either got any good shots in, but Livingston left the ice with a bloody mouth it appeared.
Here's my assessment of the game: Perron cost us the game. He was terrible tonight. Hard to say this after one game, but he's one of the over-agers we can afford to lose. Bring Daniels in, and have Lapera back him up. Lapera looked pretty good in net, many times better than Perron.
This team will NOT be as bad as everyone said they would be. The play was bad tonight, on both sides...VERY rusty. But I think when our team learns to work with the guys we have, we could turn out very much like the Soo did last year...young team who makes a run for it in the end. I'm going out on a limb and saying we will make the playoffs this season. Will we get past round one? Let's see how we are going in, but I say we make the playoffs at least.
Jack Combs will be one of our top point getters this season. Look for a lot of brilliance out of this kid. VERY good hands.
Mirovich got his first goal tonight, look for it to be one of many this season. I think this kid is good too.
Nigel Williams: WHERE IS THAT SLAP SHOT??? Geez, how many times did he pass it away tonight when he had an open shot to the net??? I like Nigel, but he needs to get his head in this game. And stop with the stupid penalties...
That's all I have to say. I really want to make it out Saturday...going to a wedding beforehand but might try to get the girlfriend to leave early enough to get to the Dow for the puck drop...we shall see. Based on tonight's attendance, I assume it should be easy to pick up last-minute tickets on Saturday.

to add a couple things before sleep...
Lepera was going to come in at the next stoppage BEFORE they soo's 5th goal. He already had the helmet on and was ready to come on at the whistle.
Breen was going to hurt Livingston if he ever picked his head up...he had a very strong grip on him and it looked boring because Breen didn't waste punches and get tired (smart)...if it was UFC, breen would have given a few knees since Livingston was bent over that far.
my new favorite player...aldicock...this guy went out on his first shift, took runs at 3 different guys and got an elbowing penalty. He went to the box without a shift later sitting in for someone. On his second shift he recieved a roughing double minor for trying to fight somebody. 2 shifts...THREE times in the box. In games that get out of hand, i'm going to like having this kid around!!!!!!!

If Livingston would have ever let go of Breen's right hand, he would have been killed. He was lucky to escape with only a bloody mouth. Breen totally misplayed the puck carrier on goal #6--the only one Lepara gave up, and it wasn't his fault--but it looks like we have someone who will be effective in protecting our smaller players. Kudoes to Ryan McDonough tonight--an excellent game, and not just offensively. He made some good plays in his own end. The fact that he is wearing an A tells me he has a new attitude to go with the new year and new coaching staff. Jack Combs also had an excellent game, and played with a bit of a snarl. No sugar coating it--Perron had an awful game, the worst since he's been in Saginaw. He fought the puck all night long, and never once looked comfortable. We were all chuckling when Lepera came in--the poor kid probably just thought he was going to come to Saginaw, stay on the bench and have a good seat for the game, and POW! Right into the fire. He played well. Nigel Williams' skating continues to amaze--how does he do it at his size?? Someone mentioned his passing--the Soo was on top of him every time he had the puck, and he never had a chance to unload his shot. Unlike Josh Godfrey, who kept getting left alone at the point, scored once and had another shot tipped in. I thought TJ Brodie looked good--he was in on a lot of stuff, and spent quite a bit of time paired with NW, the rest with Chris Breen. And finally what impressed my section the most was what Watson promised--this team never quit working hard, not even when they came into the thrid period in real trouble. They played hard and smart and made a game out of it. I'll say it again--we're going to see what kind of teachers these new coaches are in a hurry. If they are good, we could see some fun in the second half of the season. Oh yes--TWICE the Spirit had 6 minutes worth of penalties more than the Soo, coming out of scrums where both teams were throwing punches. SHAUN DAVIS SUCKS!!!!!!!
EDIT--SSF, Mursak did indeed play tonight. The Wings sent him back this morning and he was ready to go for the game. He wasn't involved in any scoring, not surprising since he hasn't practiced with anyone. But he went after a guy in the corner who was trying to rough up Nick Crawford!

Penalties were rough.
I want to point out that while I only singled out a few players, the entire team really did play well, despite how the final score may look. I see a lot of promise there. The beginning was rough, but once we got through the first, things looked better.
The refereeing was terrible as usual. I hate the two-ref system, I really do.
To defend my position on Williams, he had three good chances to let one rip, and chose not to. He did let one or two go that were blocked thoughout the night, but yes, these teams expect him to shoot and generally block him...but from section 16 (which I was supposed to be in section 17 according to my phone call when I ordered my ticket, what happened SPIRIT STAFF???), there was one really wide open shot that Williams should have taken. Ah well. He gets frustrated quickly too, which leads to bad penalties.
Oh, Combs got away with one in the third...after play had been stopped and as they were all leaving the scrum, he took a shot at someone and unless it was embelished some, he got him good, but no call, and it was right in front of a ref. We ended up on the powerplay, which we probably should have been 4 on 4.
Alright, I'm going to bed. Again, a lot of promise in this young team, and they never did stop fighting, which was a relief after some of the games last season.

eric, I will give you that one on Williams--there was one shot he was wide open on and didn't take, but he had a lot blocked. Considering the caliber of the the officiating, particularly as it related to the Spirit, I can't blame him for being frustrated, but he has to learn to get over that, eh? That Combs' shot was indeed embellished big-time (it was right in front of me)--I was shocked they didn't call a penalty on it anyway.............

Soo wins it 7-5. Looks like it was too little, too late for Saginaw. How did the Breen-Livingston fight go in the 3rd period?? Good start for Ryan McDonough getting 2 goals and 3rd star. As usual, the OHL online scoresheet has an error. It shows Mursak in the Saginaw line up which we all know was not true. Are there any other errors in the Saginaw lineup?? www.ontariohockeyleague.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=14458 Mursak was in the lineup. must caught that 10 pm Northwest flight from Minneapolis to mbs last night ;D With that said, I was not all that impressed by his performance tonight, maybe I was keying in on some of the new guys, but he just didn't show much till the third period. Same can be said for Zaborsky, it looked like he was just going through the motions. Perron was horrible, 3 goals on 13 shots (i think) if he comes out after the 3rd goal, we probably win tonight. I hate to say it but if I were coach, I'd have one less over ager to worry about tonight. I know he can do better. other notes, I sure did like the tenacity of alicock, szwarz, and pachis, not afraid to mix it up in the corners. Murovich had glimpses of geoff platt, small, quick and nimble. T.j. brodie played well i thought though I must admit, on all but two of the soo goals I was yack'n with friends from last season. While I felt the first period the team looked very disoriented, I think they pulled it together for that short run in the third and really made a game of it. If these guys can hit on all cylinders and get some good goal tending, I think they'll do just fine.

Appreciate all of the comments on the game. Sounds like this could be a fun team to watch develop as the season progresses. As long as the Spirit beat the dreaded Sarnia "Stink" Saturday night that's all that matters, right?? I'll be up bright and early Sunday morning to listen right here from my apartment office overlooking the beautiful Shanghai skyline.

Did I miss something? Zelenbaba is no longer listed under the team Daniels Perron and Leperra are listed as our goalies. the player numbers are listed as well. bass, pyatt, and mcneill are listed as P Zelenbaba was moved to the Prospects list so that probably means he was sent down to Jr. B Leamington. Are you paying attention sagspiritsfan?? Any comments now?? www.saginawspirit.com/ss/home.nsf/public/prospects.htmO'Marra is still listed on the main roster as #22 instead of being moved to the bottom with a P like McNeill, Pyatt, and Bass. Give it another week and everything will be up to date.

Now for a very important question: Did the Spirit wear their red 3rd jerseys or the blue jerseys Neither, they wore their whites... HMMM!!! I thought it was dark jerseys at home the 1st half of the season and whites at home the 2nd half. Did the Soo wear their black 3rd jerseys??
