Both sound like players. Hope the brain trust know more than they are telling, re: neither one being in Saginaw, at least next year......... Windsor drafted Cam Fowler, the Rangers' #1 pick last season to whom they relinquished the rights for a compensatory pick. Obviously Fowler did not report to Kitchener. I would have to guess Windsor is on to something to take him that high after he was a no-show for another OHL team.

I hope both players make the decision to play next year. We sure could use a few more goal scorers to take the pressure off Combs and McDonough. It sounds like the parents of Saad are leery about letting him leave the nest for Saginaw. Maybe Murovich could talk him into coming to the Spirit. I would doubt that you will see Parker at all if he does not come next year having committed verbally to college already. Looks like a couple of big D drafted.

Hopefully this does not follow in the path of the Soo's first round pick last year. He never did report, and was finally traded to....Kingston? Brampton? Anyway, an Eastern Conference team close to his home. It certainly didn't hurt the Soo last year, but it won't help them a year or two down the road.

SF8 - you are speaking of Jordan Mayer, drafted 13th overall by the Hounds in the 2007 OHL Priority Draft. A Kingston native, he refused to report to the Soo and continued playing Jr. A hockey in Kingston until being traded to Mississauga St. Mike's on January 1st for Matt Caria (an '88), plus an exchange of draft picks. Jordan was 6-11-17 in 32 games for St. Mike's this past season. Spirit fans know what Caria did for the Soo.

He is the guy, johnt, and Caria was a thorn in our side, for sure. As far as I can tell, Caria is undrafted, and thus eligible to return as an OA this season, which would be bad news for the Spirit. As I have previously stated (many times!!!) I don't have a problem in going for it when you have the horses, as the Soo did this year. But I would point out that 1) last year's first round pick is gone, and 2) they had a first round pick this year--and then not another selection til the 4 th round. Unless they have a very definite plan in mind, that's a pretty big hole. There are a lot of ways to play the game, and truthfully, I guess a team usually doesn't know how things panned out for at least a year or two. That's a long way of repeating that I hope the Spirit brain trust has inside info that our first round pick is reporting. Or at the very least, that they knew of and planned for this eventuality. Let's talk about the jersey burning in Belleville some more. It's a much more exciting topic!!! (and yes, I am rolling my eyes while typing!!!!!)

Would someone please explain to me how a 15 year old kid (John Parker), just entering his sophomore year of high school, can *commit* to an NCAA school to play hockey (or any other sport)?

Kids are "committing" to play basketball in Jr. High. Tim Floyd (coach at USC) is notorious for this practice. The unfortunate thing for this Parker kid is that there is no guarantee that he's going to umass...just because you're verbally committed doesn't mean there's a scholarship until you sign a letter of intent from the school to get your scholarship. There's even such cases with verbal commitments like this one that happened this year: msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/7769334/

DJ's got it right. It's a verbal committment and it's non-binding. He can't sign a letter on intent until he is a senior. I pretty sure that there is even a specific date before that can happen.

This is one of my only real beefs with the OHL (and by extension, the NCAA, since they consider CHL hockey to be "professional") Having to commit to major junior hockey at this age really closes a lot of other avenues. This is a major life decision. When I think of my kids at 15--they could hardly decide which death metal group's T-shirt they were going to wear that day..............It would certainly be nice if there was some sort of reciprocity between the CHL and the NCAA, as apparently exists with such leagues as the USHL. (Not happening, I know. Just a pipe dream) In light of all this, I always find it very interesting when a Canadian kid chooses to go the NCAA route, as more of them seem to be doing. A hard choice for them too, in light of how Major Jr hockey in Canada is often viewed as the One True Way to the NHL.

Eric Defendorf (sp?) was a hot-shot basketball player at Bay City Central a few years back that "committed" to Mich State after his sophomore year. After his junior year he took back that comittment and then signed with Syracuse in his senior year, which he played at a prep school in Virginia.
This is not uncommon. Most kids do this to get the college recruiters off their back.

So Parker hasn't really *committed* to attending UMASS-Amherst. He has really only said that this is the route he'd like to take after high school. Seems to me that the website quoted was taking liberties with the meaning of the word "commit". If John is truly serious about pursuing a hockey career, he could likely change his mind in the near future. Looks like the ball (puck?) now rests in Spirit ownership and management"s court (rink) to convince him that the OHL is the best way to go. Let's hope that they are successful. He'd be a great addition to the Spirit line-up.
