So after hearing Greg calling tonight's game, I realized just how much I missed him here in Saginaw! I think the Spirit should do whatever it takes to hire him back full time as the team's play by play guy. What does everyone else think? If you don't think he should be brought back, tell us who would be better!!!

It might be quite the offer they'd have to pitch.
I would bet that anyone working the afternoon drive show in Toronto would be making six figures. I bet you Fic was making less than half that.
You'd have thought also that there might have been an effort to "sweeten the pot" to keep him from jumping to Windsor last season, and maybe there was, but his mind was made up.
I ran into Warren Rychel at a game last season and asked him about Brady around Christmastime and he indicated that Brady was going to be there a long time and was also potentially going to have a role which had something to do with making hockey decisions similar to what Jim McKellar does in London as "Assistant GM".
My sense is that Mancini utilized him quite often, and there was a lot of mutual respect between them. And that any sign of tension between the two in the BlueLine club was mostly for show. He clearly knows the league well and isn't afraid to say what he thinks. But I'm sure the offer to do a great time slot on the Maple Leafs flagship was more than what the Spits could offer, as well.
Either way, he mentioned in the postgame as I was driving home that Terry Doyle is again doing Saturday's game, but he described jokingly with Rosie that Friday's broadcaster is "TBA".
What would others think if they could end up with Terry Doyle full-time? They could do a lot worse....and yes, last year, they did!
Also - does Don Edwards ever take questions in the Blue Line Club? - just asking...

I think Doyle is still doing Sarnia's games. He was last year. I heard they are looking at a local guy, already familiar with Spirit fans and local radio. I don't want to give the name however he has never done hockey play by play before.

Does he come highly-recommended by Muskegon fans?
Risky move, getting someone who's never called hockey and may not have grown up with the sport, but whoever he is, he'll get a fair shake from me. Hopefully, they've learned their lesson with Fic not to overpromote his fantastic "Hall-of-Fame" credentials and smooth call!

Sounds like Brady and Doyle alreday have committments. Maybe Saginaw needs a fresh hockey voice to bring in some enthusiasm to what sounds like a stale organization that could use a shot in the arm with new blood...

I love Greg Brady. I even took a radio to the game last night to hear him do one last Spirit broadcast. I'd love to know if the Spirit genuinely tried to keep him, or if they offered him the same deal as Fic. His closeness with Mancini would certainly raise the possibility that there were "philosophical differences" there, too. With all that said--the afternoon drive time show on Toronto's #1 sports station is one of the premier jobs in sports radio. And--assuming the Bradys have moved there--it doesn't involve travel, something Greg indicated was important to him w/ young children. He won't be back. And kudoes to him for landing that spot. We knew he was great when we had him. Now other people know it too.

Heard that when Brady left a couple years ago, he gave the Spirit 4 names to contact as possible replacements. None of the 4 were contacted. how do you know? That's the type of rumor that starts unending arguments on here. If that's true, list the 4 names...otherwise, delete the post, it will only get people fired up.

I was told the same thing by Greg himself...I do not recall all the names, but one was Sean Ballgien (sp), same guy that did color for him....

In defence of the Spirit, and probably Brady....
Mentioning that Baligian is a candidate doesn't mean the Spirit somehow dropped the ball on getting him here. He is also employed, in a major market, with little kids (not sure how many) so it's not like he'd have moved up on short notice either.
Watch. This is what will happen.
They'll hire someday who...
1. Isn't currently employed in a "big" market.. 2. Isn't currently doing play-by-play 3. Has no children. 4. Will drop his current gig at a moment's notice.
It's all they can do right now. Fic SCREWED them. Some people tried to defend the hire, and now they can't.
He was terrible on the radio.
The Spirit brass are telling everyone who'll listen he was awful at selling and maintaining accounts.
He had no personality with Todd Watson. I agree, Watson isn't the most gregarious personality ever, but it was painful to watch the two interact.
And then, he leaves them HIGH and FREAKING DRY a week before the regular season starts, and he takes a guy's job in Muskegon who was looking forward to starting the season.
Their previous PBP guy was let go. Released. He got two weeks pay. He's now unemployed. Reprehensible.
It's scummy. It's crappy. It's so below the belt.
So I really do feel sorry for the Spirit that they got themselves mixed up with this loser. Seriously, it's how I feel. But they hired him, so they have to sleep in the bed they made.
I mean seriously, who do they really think, of quality, they'll get to show up later this week and immediately travel to Sarnia and the Sault, NEVER having:
a) called a hockey game on the radio b) never having seen an OHL game (although they hired their GM based on this criteria - at least since the time that he played..)
Fic. Bushleague. Attack that. You can't. I'm possibly wrong more often than I'm right, but I'll fight anyone on this one..

Great Post.
I have to agree, the interaction between Fic and Watson was at times the most painful radio I have ever listened too.
Fic sounded like he had one lung deficient, and a deep nasally - I am out of breath.
In the end the best move we could make is bring in a new young fresh voice.

So can someone email the Spirit and ask who's doing this weekend's games.
Given it's the only way to follow for some of us, and the easiest, I am quite curious.
