Watched the Spits vs. Bulls last night on OHL Livestream. It was Windsor's first game since the tragedy a week and a half ago and a sell-out (4,200+). Was a tearful night at The Barn (aka Madhouse on McDougal St.). Both teams wore special warm-up jerseys, all #18 with Mickey's name on the back and a "C" on the front. They played a 15 minute tribute to Mickey on their two big screen TVs, plus the video we saw in Saginaw earlier. After this, there was a "moment" of silence that lasted close to 5 minutes. The Spits players then, one-by-one, skated to center ice, took off their warm-up jerseys, and placed them on a table. I'd estimate that almost half of the players (and me!) had tears in their eyes when doing this. The ceremonial puck drop was done by Mickey's family. When the PA announcer asked each team's captain to come to center ice for the drop, only B-Ville's captain skated forward. After the drop, Brad Snetsinger (one of Mickey's closest friends) came forward, picked up the puck, and handed it to the family.
Game was a dandy, with the Bulls winning it in a shoot-out. Spits played hard the entire evening, but came up a little short. Game was very clean with virtually no nasty stuff taking place.
After the final buzzer, the Spits gathered at center ice to salute their fans (ala Sarnia). Bulls stood in front of their bench and did the same. Both teams then lined up to shake hands and mingled for a short time. Really, really cool.
A tribute to the Spits' organization for a very special night and to the Bulls for showing class throughout the entire evening.
