This is awesome!!! I fondly remember the Gears-Generals rivalries!!! As for a name, they were also the Bulldogs for a season or two in the old - ugh - Colonial league. Honestly, I'd love if they were given the ok to use the Generals name... There is precedent- there are two "Admirals" in the AHL! Don't know why Generals would be an issue. How many 'Tigers' in SEC? I don't think it's an issue with Oshawa/Flint, I think it's more of an issue for Flint associating hockey with the most recent Flint Generals and their mediocre hockey and questionable ownership. They could still do a fun night like the Spirit did and wear the old Generals or Spirits jerseys and invite some old players back but I think that IMS will probably go the way of the naming contest to get the public involved. I wonder what school they'll go to? I would assume UofM Flint for the older kids that actually want to take classes but what about the high school kids. Flint Powers is pretty close and would probably make the parents from Canada happy that their kids are going to a good school.

Hoping for the best here, but watching the final days of the IHL in Flint 5/6 years ago was painful. (Think Zambonis leaking fluid all over the ice and canceled games due to h.v.a.c. 'issues') IMA's only 3 years older than Wendler but it needs a ton of work, IMO. Think Flint may support an OHL team, but just hope Papista's group is fully committed with a solid marketing plan early (i.e., not Dayton)

The Gears are gone and so are the Generals....time to move past that whole thing. I like the idea of the Flint Phoenix. Wish I had thought of it. You get the double "F" without using a double "F". Plus you get that whole "out of the ashes" thing going on. Plus the logo would look amazing on a hockey jersey. You can't beat the short road trip. It should put butts in the seats in both directions. This is a good thing for Michigan Hockey.

No idea what happened to my post from late last night addressing schools, but in it I speculated that Grand Blanc HS would be the landing spot. This mornings Free Press confirms that, quoting Papista that an agreement is already in place w GBHS.

I think that was just them locking that up for future use if need be. I think they are smart enough to know that they need a fresh start and a naming contest is the way to go. That said, they will need to move quickly to get the work done if they choose not to use the Whalers name. Moving a team is easy. Starting up a new team is a lot more involved.

Do you think they have a choice on the Whalers name? I would have thought that might have been a term in the sale since the Whalers nickname stems from Karmanos owning Hartford...I thought maybe he'd want to keep the name with him. I have no idea though. The only thing I do know, this is GREAT for Saginaw and a lot of people were talking about it at the game last night. Should be a great rivalry and it's close enough that you'll actually get a decent amount of opposing fans in the building which always makes for a fun game. Hopefully we own them, of course

Open request to Saginaw and Flint ownership groups: Please DO NOT schedule games between the 2 teams on week nights. All 8 games of the season series need to be on Friday nights (after HS football season) and Saturday nights.

They have to play some games during the week and it makes sense that it be a nearby opponent. They would not like to bring Ottawa or Bellevile in during the week since it means the kids would miss a lot of school.

I still like the idea of the Flint Flames...found this online, someone must have made an alternate jersey for Calgary.

One of the reasons I like the Flint "Phoenix" is the whole Greek mythology thing. A phoenix being a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Just like hockey in Flint.

If they really wanted to heat up the rivalry, they should name them the Gears.

If they really wanted to heat up the rivalry, they should name them the Gears. Would not work. The Flint fans would show up to a game and boo their own team.
