BP I must be missing something. Your last paragraph says only one person has been drafted by the NHL while on the team. That’s 1000 percent wrong they have had lots of players drafted into the NHL. Maybe you were just talking about 1st rounders and messed up, or maybe the Coronavirus has gotten into you keyboard and it isn’t responding well. You did miss something. All of my posts on this tread have been about the First Round of the NHL draft. I say that Matt Corrente is the only Saginaw Spirit Player who was drafted in the First Round. We have had other First Round Selections play for the team but none of them were Spirit Players when they were Drafted. To prove that I am 1000 percent wrong please name for me any other players that have played for the Spirit who were Spirit players when they were drafted in the First Round of any NHL Draft. Hope that clears things up. If it helps, This is from my original post on this thread "The Spirit have only had one player taken in the first round. In the 2006 Draft New Jersey took Matt Corrente 30th overall." That statement is 100 percent factually correct. Remember we are only talking about Spirit players at the time they were taken in the NHL Draft. Please name for me another Spirit player who was drafted in the first round of any NHL Draft. If it helps, I have taken the time to re-read all of my posts in this thread and all of them say "first round". And the fact that up till now the only Saginaw Spirit Player, who played for the Spirit at the time of the draft, has been taken in the first round. That statement is now and was the first time I said it, 100 percent factually correct.

Just to help clarify my point I will use the names that have been offered here to show why they don't make the list of Spirit Players who were drafted in the first round as a Saginaw Spirit Player:
Ryan O'Marra was drafted by the New York Islanders while a member of the Erie Otters. Ryan Suzuki was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes while a member of the Barrie Colts Owen Tippett was drafted by the Florida Panthers while a member of the Missisuaga Steelheads Phil Kessel was drafted by the Boston Bruins while a member of Minnesota (WCHA) Mark Scheifele was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets while a member of the Barrie Colts Jamie Oleksiak was drafted by the Dallas Stars while a member of Northeastern (H-East) Kyle Connor was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets while a member of Youngstown (USHL) Alex Turcotte was drafted by the LA Kings while a member of USA U-18 (U.S. NTDP)
As you can see, none of these players were drafted into the NHL while they were players for the Saginaw Spirit. Some never played for Saginaw while other became players after they were drafted.
The bottom line is that only one player, who was a player at the time he was drafted, has been drafted in the First Round and that player was Matt Corente. The only other player who came close was Brandon Saad who was projected to be a first round selection but an injury in his draft year pushed him to the early second round. That worked out pretty well for him and the Chicago Blackhawks.

For those of you who are still not on board, let me put it this way. Only one Spirit Player, who was Drafted in the First round of any NHL Team heard the words " The (insert NHL team name here) are proud to select from the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL(insert name here) Only one name can go here and it's Matt Corrente. www.draftsite.com/nhl/draft-history/2006/

When did Mark Scheifele play for the Spirit? I never heard of him. He didn't. He was a Spirit Draft Pick. The team took a flyer on him in the 7th round in 2009, but could not get him to report so they traded his rights to Barrie. Of course Barrie signed him.

I was simply trying explain the difference between a Spirit player on Draft Day and a player who may have become a Spirit player thru a trade at a later date who played for somebody else when they were drafted by an NHL team. Call it a "home grown" pick versus a "Rental Player" pick. I think it's a big deal when a Spirit Player gets drafted in the first round because it's rare. So rare that it has only happened one time in Spirit History. So the record Perfetti has to be picked in the first round earlier than the 30th pick to beat the record. I think he can do it.

Love that the Wings are filling up on Swedish players...could be some nice future targets for us in the import draft!

Love that the Wings are filling up on Swedish players...could be some nice future targets for us in the import draft! It seems like the Red Wings draft strategy hasn't changed with Holland being gone. Not saying it's right or wrong. Let's just hope some of these draft picks, like all the others, pan out an become good players.

Easy to draft Swedish players this year. With them already playing they get plenty of views.

It's a little disappointing to only have one "current" player selected this year. Of the 217 players selected only Cole Perfetti is listed from the Saginaw Spirit. Ilya Solovyov was drafted as a member of his KHL team where he finished his season after the OHL shut down. Crazy year for sure.

Well we have Lennox, Bloom, Mancini and Codd next year. Maybe we can go 4 for 4.

Never thought of that but yes, I totally agree. Remember that Smith was the youngest player in the draft. If he was born one day later his draft year would have been 2021
