It has become apparent that the Spirit team that was on the ice last night is not the same team we saw 3 weeks ago. Their game is slow, sloppy and flat. They would rather pass the puck than shoot, and there was NO cohesiveness. Who or what gives?

Well, it certainly isnt Lennox, who both nights deserved a far better fate. Scoring definitely appears to be an issue. The D has lapses, but for the most part they’ve been reasonably stout. (Today against the Soo excepted). The PP is the biggest problem this team has, much like the Red Wings of the 2 or 3 previous years.

We didn't get Perfetti back to sell off for assets and our 2020 1st rounder didnt report. I dont think the plan was ever to be a contending team this season. Best bet is get the young guys as much time as possible to learn, develop, and be at the top of thier game in two seasons when we make another run. It will help we get 2 first round picks this offseason to build around our already talented young players.

I noticed last night that it seemed like there were three or four Spirit players going for the puck at the same time, leaving no one for an outlet pass. The same in front of the net, so many players in the slot area no pucks could get through. I also think other coaches are cathching on to Coach Lazary's style.

I'm speaking in general since I'm not a coach, but it seems like the opponents are anticipating many of the moves and passes from the Spirit players. I like Coach Lazary and I'm sure he'll figure what's behind this slump and get it fixed.

So just curious what is Laz’s style that has become so predictable? I dont think the style has become stale or predictable, the problem is we just dont have the current personal to run it effectively. The style requires a ton of hockey IQ to run effectively and incredibly mobile defense who can essentially act as a 4th and 5th forward at times. Look at who Laz and Drinkill have brought in in deals that execute the style to perfection (McLeod,Tippett,Perfetti, Suzuki all OHL level elite IQ). Mintyukov has elite IQ and one of the most mobile d in the O, Sapovaliv has a great hockey iq as well. The issue is we are incredibly young. 2nd youngest team in the O. Outside of the imports and Bloom and Codd we have limited options at running that system to perfection TODAY. McNamara and Savard fit but are a year out from really shining. The team will restock with players that can be elite in those areas. 2 firsts this year will go along way in that.

I think this season is going exactly as we expected it would go. It's a young team, and they're inconsistent. As they continue to get better and hone their talent (there is a lot of potential talent here), they will continue to get more and more consistent. Right now we have a shot to win any game we play, and going forward over the next two seasons it will go from having a shot to being expected. It's how rebuilds work. And for those who have been around for a long time, this type of rebuild where we start with a lot of potential talent is a lot better than the ones we used to do where you could expect to miss any shot at the playoffs before the season even began.
We've had two good years. Now is when the front office staff earn their money, by getting us back there again. COVID screwed us over. Time to move on and start over, which is what we're doing.

I think Eric nailed it - COVID screwed us. We have essentially an entire new team with a couple of exceptions that have not played a competitive game of hockey in 18 months or so adjusting to new teammates and a new system. It's going to take some time to find their rhythm together. Be patient and just be thankful we have hockey to watch again.

Also don't forget that we spent the first month of the season playing Erie and Flint and then mixed Sarnia in a bit. All three of those teams aren't great so now that we're playing some better (and older) teams, the flaws in our young team will start to present itself and the record will head towards who our team really is this year. There is talent on the team but everyone is so young so it's going to take a while to see the results.

Being patient is hard but the kids all need time to grow and gel. And I am VERY thankful that we have hockey to watch again!
