DD is at it again with his favorite trading partner Barrie:
We get: Hunter Haight (2nd round NHL Draft pick and 2004 which means we have him for a year and a half at least and hopefully a lot of playoff games)
We give up: 3 - 2nd round picks 2 - 3rd round picks
I'm a little surprised we didn't give up a player (like a Phillips or someone) to avoid a pick but maybe Barrie wasn't interested in a player coming back.
I'm glad we made this trade now instead of next year because he'll help us stay good this year and will be a star next year most likely.

Full breakdown of the picks:
2024 2nd Round (North Bay) 2025 2nd Round (Saginaw) 2025 3rd Round (Saginaw) 2026 2nd Round (Saginaw) 2026 3rd Round (Saginaw)
Saginaw appears to be getting an early start on loading up for next year. I don't know a whole lot about Haight but some Barrie (and Minnesota Wild) fans have felt he's been needing a change of scenery (just 9 points in 20 games). Five picks seems like a lot for one player, but he'll be around a while and hopefully he can get his game going.

Look at the likes of Duhart and Hill who weren't scoring machines but have contributed fantastically to the team. Plus if you read the Spirit release (which I know is designed to make it show why they made the trade) - it sounds like they have legitimately been eyeing him for a while. The quotes just seem more (exciting?) then the deal with North Bay, so I have no doubt we are a better team now. I still think Mintyukov should be moved if possible to recuperate some of these picks, after all we still never restocked from the pre-covid season.

The only issue with moving Mintyukov is he is an import. With only 2 roster spots for imports it’s much tougher to trade him than a non import player.

I don't understand all this talk about trading Mintyukov. DD is in the process of assembling a team that could win the OHL championship this season and Mintyukov is a key component to make that happen.

Same people who have traded Lennox a million times. lol. If I had a dollar for every player that was on the almost certain trade block on these boards who never ended up being traded I'd be rich. lol. That being said, the argument for trading Pavel is that we're not going for it this year, our goal is to go for it NEXT year. However, I don't think the mindset of DD or Laz has ever been "one year." I also don't believe they are a complete rebuild type either. The only reason we had to essentially start over last year was because of COVID and where it fell in the cycle. Had the pandemic not happened, I do not believe we would have fallen anywhere near where we did. Then again, we also wouldn't have Misa right now either, so I'd say it worked out for the best. The fact that DD has done such a great job rebuilding in just a year should really make everyone excited about our future here in Saginaw.

DD is in the process of assembling a team that could win the OHL championship this season and Mintyukov is a key component to make that happen. It’s a long term thing. GM’s can’t get tunnel vision. Lazary is an amazing coach and gets the most from his players. HOWEVER, we are absolutely playing a bit over our heads at the moment, including some insane goaltending. I think we come back to earth a bit after the deadline when the true contenders are defined. I think we settle into a 4 or 5 seed and scare someone in the second round. I wouldn’t favor us over Owen Sound or Flint (they will add more) or a North Bay if it came to that. As good as we are now, we can be Windsor 09-10 back to back good in the next two years. You don’t pass that chance up. And DD’s deals are setting us up for as much. Now that doesn’t mean Mintyukov gets moved just to move him. He’s arguably the second highest prize out there, Wright being number one. But he is the best D available and a guy who can take over games. Even if he is an import, teams WILL make room for that. DD will move him for the right price and honestly I don’t think we get much worse without him if he does it right. It’s the smart thing to do but it probably won’t happen until late December so enjoy him for now.

For the best D man in the OHL, I’m pretty sure teams would find a way. The other thing is the king’s ransom it’s going to take to get him for hslf a season.

I personally have no issue with Drinkill moving him if the price is right. Saginaw traded Jan Mursak a few years ago so it can happen.

Mintyukov is by far my favorite player on this team. That said, I trust Drinkill to make the right move, whatever happens.

It was a game against Barrie so I'm putting it in this thread. Watched on streaming last night...man, we just couldn't get it past that goalie...he really played well! Nice to see Haight score against his old team and he's just been killing it. 9pts in 20 games with Barrie...10pts in 4 games with us. Very happy that we'll have him for 2 years! Great trade by DD! Hopefully the team can keep up the energy on this road trip!

Another assist tonight in Sudbury gives Haight 11 points in 5 games with the Spirit.
