Decided to change Game(Day)Thread to Game(Week)Thread. Big matchup tonight against the Soo. Guessing the crowd will be pretty light but click on this link and scroll down to the "Matchup" stats. It's dang near even with the major exception being the Power Play and Penalty Kill stats. If we can draw penalties tonight, I think we'll win but I see the refs are Monette and Hennigan so hoping the refs are on our side is unlikely. chl.ca/ohl/gamecentre/26931/

Interesting line tonight...Moore is playing on the top line with Beck and Bloom. I like the way Moore plays so I'm interested to see the chemistry of that group.

Spirit fall 5-3 after giving up five unanswered goals after a 3-0 lead. Oke was stellar and made some amazing saves. Spirit Fan Nation is losing its collective minds, so maybe we can have a sensible conversation about it over here.
Last night sure had playoff vibes, and was a tight game despite the 3-0 score to start. Two of the Spirit goals were trickle-in goals. The Soo didn't back down and made us pay late. Seemed like the Spirit just weren't able to get out of their own zone once the Soo really started locking things down. The Soo was shutting everything down in the neutral zone, not even letting us get on offense throughout much of the second half.

Frustrating for sure. The Soo won all four games at the Dow this year. Feels like we should have won at least two of those. I still think we're a better team, honestly, but for some reason we struggle to put a full 60 minutes on them. Hope this isn't a game we'll look back on when the division title is coming down the wire.

We've won the games in the Soo though, so hopefully when we match up with them in the playoffs they get home ice? lol

I don't know if matters or not, but the goalie for the Soo is a lefty with his stick/blocker in his left hand and his glove in his right hand. I wonder if that makes a difference since most goalies are right handed.

I wonder if that makes a difference since most goalies are right handed. I think it does and here's my logic...every player has a "go-to" move on a breakaway. For a right-handed shot maybe it's bring it in on your forehand and at the last second go to the backhand and flip it above the pad and under the blocker. Against Schenkel, now that move is going into his glove hand and in those split second decisions, I'm guessing most are going to go to "old faithful" instead of changing it up and it may play into the strengths of the Soo goalie. If it was me coaching, I'd bring in a local (emergency backup style) goalie or someone in our system who catches right so the players can work some moves against that style of goalie. May not matter as much during the regular season but if we end up in a 7game series vs the Soo, it could prove to be very valuable.

I have no idea why Sault Ste Marie played their backup goaltender tonight. They don’t play again until Wednesday night. Makes Wednesday night’s choke job even more disappointing. Need to win these next 2 games.

Spirit squandered a 2 goal lead and fell behind 3-2 in the 3rd period to Barrie. They tied it up and won it in OT on a Sapovaliv 4 on 3 power play goal. Giving up odd man rushes and ill advised pinching in the offensive zone led to the blown lead. Zayne Parekh scored his 23rd goal of the season breaking Patrick McNeill’s season goal record of 22 goals set back in the 2006-07 season.

And on Sunday the Spirit rallied from a 4-2 late 3rd period deficit to win 5-4 in OT. Interesting weekend to say the least. I thought in the Barrie game we played really well for the first 35 minutes or so and then got way too relaxed and the Colts took advantage. I didn't catch the Ottawa game. The Hounds loss still irks me but I guess in the end we got 4 out of 6 points for the weekend and are now in sole possession of first place in the division with 20 games left. I think Saginaw has a slightly easier remaining schedule than the Hounds do, but as we've seen lately, records haven't really mattered much.

I thought the Ottawa game we had plenty of pressure and chances, just couldn't get the puck to go in. I was pretty confident when we got it to just one that we were coming back and winning that one. I think Saginaw outplayed Ottawa most of the game.
Four points on the weekend is good — doesn't matter that the other team got a point since they're both Eastern teams, so however you get the two you'll take it. Can't fall behind like that against the top teams though, because you won't come back like that.

Dropping the game to the Soo is not ideal but going back to the beginning of that long win streak in Nov when the season got back on track, we have gotten majority or all of the points available every week except 1. And that one we went 2/4. 4 to 6 pts every single week. We might have an off night every so often but we are not going to be fun to play in a series.

Happy with the end of results but special teams as of lately has appeared to be a lot worse for the wear. Special teams did carry us in a large part of our games - we don't exactly blow out other teams (yes, there's been a couple - Kingston, Windsor, Kitchener at the start of the year) - but the PP looks lost lately. And on the PP, it looks like we are always looking for the backdoor cross ice pass. It's nice when it works, but it certainly looks like teams are catching on.
Another big weekend cumulating with a trip up to the Soo on Sunday. Let's hope that pattern of winning on the road their continues.
