I've been reading Kevin's work for almost 20 years now. I'm hoping to get to all 60, too. Nice to see he thinks highly of the Dow.

The 360-degree walking concourse at the Dow just makes for such enjoyable game watching. You can walk right up the main steps as soon as you're in the building and you're watching the game on your way to your seats...I haven't come across many other arenas like this in my day and new arenas wouldn't be built like that because they would use that for additional seating much like Joe Louis did when they added on concourse seating. It also creates "standing room" seating and when it's full (like the Memorial Cup) it just creates a great environment of feeling like the place is truly packed.

I do enjoy that he put more stock into the atmosphere and history of a building as much as the architecture. When the Dow is packed, it just feels so much bigger than it is. Also for as much as Flint's arena is viewed as pretty meh, I like the fact I can just post up on the concourse to watch the game. If I'm at the Dort, I usually just buy the cheapest ticket I can and take in the game from different spots during the night. Only other venue I've got a chance to see so far is the Aud in Kitchener. Cool venue but the concourse feels like you're walking in a dungeon.

I am envious of their crowd's involvement in the game. Even when the crowd there is small, it's loud. Saginaw has improved in crowd involvement in the last few years (winning will do that), but it still can be awfully quiet in the Dow, even when it's packed.

Shawinigan in the QMJHL is very similar to the Dow in terms of the 360 concourse inside the rink itself. And that arena is only like 15 years old or so. If/when the Dow gets replaced, I wouldn't mind seeing a model similar to that. I do like that you can easily walk all the way around the rink and not miss a second of the game. Too many rinks nowadays just have one seating bowl with the concourse on top of it, and it just gets boring after a while. I think for atmosphere, Windsor and Sudbury were the best ones for me. I believe Sudbury will have a new rink before the end of the decade, and if you like to travel, I highly recommend catching a game there if you can.

I'm excited to check out London and Oshawa over Thanksgiving week, as I'm shooting the CHL/USA games out there for the CHL. Haven't been to either arena, and I get to enjoy London without the Knights. lol.
