The only banners that need to be hanging from the rafters today are OHL banners. There is no need to bring back any of the old stuff to the arena itself. I do however, think the arena needs a "Hall of Fame" area established. Peterborough has a great "Hall of Fame" in their arena that is pretty cool. You can see a Saginaw Gears Jersey there, but not here, go figure. The banners as well as other memorabilia from not only Saginaw teams, but players from the Mid-Michigan area would be on display.
The banners that were hung by the UHL team was nothing more than a publicity stunt to get Saginaw fans to buy into what the "New Gears" were trying to do. We all know how that turned out. What should be up are banners that relate to the OHL teams and players we have had here since 2002. What about "World Juniors Banners", we had one for Marek Kvapil, where is it know? Tom Pyatt wins gold last year for the Canadian team, and no banner. Why? What about our "All Stars". We are hosting the All Star game this year and there is no mention of Saginaw's past All Star participants. Why? Does anybody remember Saginaw's first OHL All Star? I do, it was Tyson Kellerman. There are plenty of things the Spirit should be proud of and should be recognized. They like to talk about how the OHL is an official supplier to the NHL, so why not a banner of all past Spirit players who have made the Show? So in my opinion the arena should be reserved for Spirit history and let's get going on a Hockey Hall of Fame for everything else. By the way, the Hall of Fame would be a good way to keep people hanging around after the game. Peace.
