Back in the UHL Gears days, we retired several numbers here in Saginaw. Seems to me it was #8 Desrosiers, #9 Westner, #12 Irving, #17 Comeau, and Don Perry's name was hanging from the rafters as well. Were there others? Does anyone know why these names were not left up there? I know it was done by the UHL team, but it was more of a SAGINAW thing than anything. It shouldn't matter what team/league is here, those names should be hanging from the rafters!!! Come on Spirit staff, make it right again!!! Get those names/numbers up there & retire the numbers that should be retired! (#1 for Mario Lessard should be up there, too, as well as Belfour's IMO.)

Sorry to resurrect an old post....  I agree, those numbers and championship banners should have been put back in the rafters three years ago. Add a banner for Ed Belfour too. Sure, he only played in Saginaw for 1 1/2 years, but he's probably the most famous player to play in the area, and a sure Hall of Famer.  PS: This time, make the banners a little bigger. The ones the Lumber Kings hung were rather dinky. |

Not UHL, those guys played for the Saginaw Gears in the once proud IHL. Maybe they should create a local hockey museum like you see in other rinks around the league remembering the old greats from the building's past. Don't hang banners just to hang banners. The first banner to go up should be a division champ banner for the Saginaw Spirit in two years (06-07). |

I know that those players were from the IHL days - they raised the banners, tho, in the UHL days.

If they don't hang them from the arena rafters how about hanging them in the concourse areas?? How about team photos of the 2 Gears Turner Cup championship teams out in the lobby or in the concourse?? For that matter how about team pictures for every team that has called the Wendler Arena/Dow Event Center Arena home?? |

i had a Mario Lessard stick, but i broke it >.<
I still have the stick, but i put a blade on the end of it. so i could still use it.

Yeah, I'm curious too if anything has come from this. It would be cool to have some of the old teams represented somehow. The Turner Cup championships were actually pretty big things if you look at it in 90's standards.

Yeah, I got a response quite a while ago, and if memory serves, they had no plans to re-retire those numbers, but something else was a possibility (a way of honoring the players & the teams). Sorry I can't give you definite details. I know Cameron Knowles comes on here sometimes, maybe he can shed some light on this.

No need to retire the numbers on the Spirit for these players just an honor ceremony would be nice or just put the banners up somewhere. Kind of like what the Maple Leafs do.
