Wow! I must say I didn't see that one coming. Now don't get me wrong, I think the Loon is a great bird. And there is nothing better than seeing one up close in nature, but when I think baseball, I don't think Loon. When I think Mid-Michigan, I don't think Loon. Plus, when you apply the name Loon to people (fans, players etc.) it isn't exactly a flattering name if you know what I mean. It will be interesting to see and hear, how this name is received in the community. I don't think it will keep people from the ball park, but I don't think this team will experience the same demand for logo wear that the Spirit have. Only time will tell.

You mean if you're a fan of the team you don't want to be known as a "LOON-atic" haha!

From The Midland daily News' poll: (as of 1130pm Sat. Night)
The Michigan Baseball Foundation announced the name of the minor league baseball team that will be playing in Midland next spring: the Great Lakes Loons. What do you think of the name? Great choice! I'm goin' loony for it ! 10.8% It's OK. At least it reflects something about Michigan. 14.8% Huh? What were they thinking? 40.8% Hate it. 33.6%

Saginaw Gens Fan, I appreciate your trying to put a positive spin on this. I guess if Lewiston can have it's MAINEiacs, Midland can have it's LOONatics. Like I said in my first post, the Loon is a very cool bird, but you don't normally associate it with the Mid Michigan area. I have seen Loons and I have enjoyed the experience very much, but it has always been further north. I hate the idea of putting "Great Lakes" in the title. Again, don't get me wrong, I love the great lakes and I love living in the Great Lake State, however, us folks in Michigan have to get over this idea that the Great Lakes somehow belong to us. If this was the only team in Michigan, then maybe you get away with it, but it's not. Where do you think the "White Caps" got their name from? The problem here is it is hard for a group who worked so hard, and is so proud of it's decision to make a change. I think they will need to do that. Keep the Loon, drop the Great Lakes in favor of either Mid-Michigan or Midland and move on. Won't keep from the ballpark. I just think they could have done better.

Great Lakes Storm anyone I do realize that they were looking for the name "Great Lakes along time ago" (they said they were looking for an area name), but the thing that irks me is that you don't really know where it is. Heck, the area doesn't even have to be Michigan at all. On a side note, I am OK with Loons, as many A-Teams seem to just go bizzare over the names. I know these have reasons as to why they are named, but still.... Miracle Keys Jethawks Hillcats Nuts Quakes Ports Oaks Warthogs (I would never cheer for a team called the warthogs) tourists snappers Kernels Grasshoppers Drive intimidators captains legends sand gnats "Swing of the Quad Cities" Volcanoes, to name a few.

The "Great Lakes" portion bothers me more than the nickname "Loons". Great Lakes is too broad. And what's wrong with making it Midland which is where the stadium is located. The Spirit being Saginaw vs Tri City, Mid Michigan, etc. doesn't keep me from going to Spirit games. It's all in how they market the team. Having a store in Saginaw is all a part of that marketing and making sure that they draw fans from all over the region.

Don't like the "Great Lakes" part either. From looking at the website, are the team colors red and green? If so: EWWWWW!!!! Its kind of a strike out for me. Red and green is too christmas like for my taste. Don't really care for the logo either.
I think the Spirit did a lot better job at picking the name, look, etc. I love the classic red-white-blue color scheme. The jerseys are sharp. The logo is cool. Everything just works. Totally a homerun.
I think they missed the mark with this.

I just thought of that one.

As for the Spirit the only thing I was disappointed in was that they used the exact same jerseys as the US national team. I would have preferred something a little more original. That's probably why I like the Spirit 3rd jersey the best.

The team website www.loons.com had a poll regarding the name (lower right hand corner of the page) but it's been removed already.......HMMMMM, I wonder why?
