this could be one of the dumbest moves ever...when you think of a name for your children you undoubtably think of how could they be made fun of. The Loons...seriously

Everyone, Do you like the name is todays Ballot Box Question in the Saginaw News. I'll post my results tomorrow. To save some time, you can vote by calling (989) 754-3100 It will be interesting to see if people in Saginaw who read the Saginaw News feel the same as those here in Midland who read the Midland Daily News. The Midland paper's on line poll is now running about 80% to 20% against the new name with over 1300 votes cast to date.

(Drumroll please) "Do you like the name Great Lakes Loons"
And the results are:
Yes - 25% (47 Calls)
I will go to watch baseball, not look at names
The name is great, and I intend to attend the games
From a marketing standpoint, its a brilliant name
No - 75% - 138 Calls
"That's absolutely the stupidest name I have ever heard for a baseball team"
It has nothing to do with mid-Michigan or Midland (That was my comment!)
Sports is all about putting the fear in your opponets, and this name just doesn't do it
The people of the mighty tri-cities have spoken! Let this unjustice be forever known!

If these polls are indicative of what all potential fans of the new team think about this name, the MBF had better come out fairly soon and address this otherwise they risk permanently alienating ~75% of their potential fan base.
You know the MBF had to have consulted with the Spirit staff about the name but it's obvious they didn't listen. Or did they even bother to consult with the Spirit. Makes you wonder.
They could have taken a lesson from the Spirit and done something like this:
Midland (insert Nickname) - Mid Michigan's or the Tri-Cities or Central Michigan's or the Saginaw Valley's Class A Professional Baseball Team

I am from Lansing originally. When the name Lugnut's was announced it met with over 90% disapproval ratings. People went, well nuts. Now it is a source of pride, the main sports bar in town is the Nuthouse and the logo (Which is a bolt not a nut ironically) is everywhere. Suggest they change the name and you are going to get your tush kicked in.
Exactly the same thing is underway already in Midland.
Not only that but it sets up the great rivalry with out closest rival, Lansing. It doesn't take a person with a PhD in marketing to see the fun and ease you can whip up interest in a Loons Vs Nuts rivalry!
Silly and fun names are a tradition in Class A baseball. You cannot go anywhere already in Midland without seeing Loons merchandise.

The Nuthouse... that wouldn't happen to be the same bar that used to be called 'The Rockhouse' several years back is it? I used to tour with a band that played at The Rockhouse in Lansing maybe 10-15 years ago. Right downtown.
