here's another article i found: text: Jakub Svoboda (Brno) — International Man of Mystery — in that he never plays internationally for the Czechs. But he's got size, drive, and lots of offensive tools. www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/columnist/woodlief/2008-03-20-red-line-report_N.htmAlso, from a chat wrap: Sarnia, Ontario: Who is your really sleeper in this draft that you see being taken fourth to seventh round? Kyle Woodlief: There are a couple of European kids who weren't on their countries' National U-18 Teams for a variety of reasons, and therefore weren't scouted that much. The first is huge (6-5/200) Swedish defenceman Anton Blomkvist, and the second is Czech winger Jakub Svoboda. These are a pair of true "sleepers" who may not get drafted at all, but a few teams with sharp European scouts likely saw these two kids and, if they have influence with their chief scouts, could persuade the chief scout to take a late chance on them.

Sounds like Svoboda isn't getting any love in the homeland (for one reason or another).
Maybe he'll be looking for a change of scenery and come to Saginaw!

www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=86583There are 2 Jakub Svobodas from the CR--ours is the 1989 one. Not exactly a lot of info, but it's a little bit. Doesn't look like he was too familiar w/ the defensive zone early in his career, but he has steadily improved. I am assuming JS remained a "true sleeper". The OHL site says he is 2009 draft-eligible--did he just miss the cutoff this season, since he is an 89? Kyle Woodlief (above) seemed to think he was in this season's draft. Anyone know anything about the"variety of reasons" he wasn't on the Czech Nat'l Team??

The Spirit select Czech Richard Jarusek a 16-year old winger with the 49th pick. It appears he played with Brno as well - same club as Svoboda.

Jarusek had no stats in the U-20 division. Looks like he probably spent last year with the U-18's for a second year in a row - they just don't have any stats available yet. This kid doesn't turn 17 until August so is eligible for next year's NHL draft.

Ok, this has nothing to do with either Jakub Svoboda, but it's an amusing commentary on one of the present NOOF topics--possible elimination of the Import Draft. loosepucks.com/index.php?blog=2&p=782&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1#more782Since the Spirit have a history of doing pretty well in this draft, I'd hate to see it go.......I guess my question would be, if Europeans are eliminated to give "good Canadian boys" more slots, does that mean teams will be limited to two US players?? Will there be a North American Import Draft?? Tongue in cheek, before anyone goes off the deep end, here..................

Wouldn't that be great to have an American only draft, then we would have less of a chance to screw up the regular draft. I take that back I dont think our Euros want to play college so we have a chance.
