OK, I know this has been discussed on here before, but why can the Dow/Saginaw figure out a solution to the snow-covered sidewalks near the arena? Seriously, it's been how many days since the last snow? And none of the sidewalks are plowed or shoveled. It's ridiculous. At some point, if the city/township/county won't step up and fix it, you'd think the Spirit staff would find a couple people to clear the way for their fans. Maybe I'm asking too much, but this shouldn't be as difficult as it seems to be. Everything else about the Spirit experience is great, but they can't even do a reasonable job of clearing the sidewalks right in front of the arena. To top it off, the new bricks they put in a couple years ago are SUPER slippery when they are wet, or have snow/ice on them, so even a small amount of slush makes them very treacherous. It's not a huge deal, I can handle walking through a little snow, just don't really think we should have to. Regardless of who's responsibility it is to clear it, it's time for someone to step up and take care of it after what, seven years?
Anyone else annoyed with this, or am I the only one? If I am, I'll shut up now :-)

The city should have never put that brick pattern in without a snow melt system underneath. The sealer they use to keep the color in the concrete is what makes it slick. The only other think they could do is power broom the sidewalks after plowing and as new snow is tracked on. The Dow should have a tractor with a power broom of their own. And by all means, put a shovel in the back of those plow trucks and let those union punks shovel where the plows can't get or where the plows leave a trail. Every year I get more perturbed about this, because it's another year the city, county, SMG and the Spirit ignore their patrons!

I've been bitching about this since the All Star game 2 years ago. I thought it presented a horrible image of Saginaw. I would also include the sidewalks by the long closed HJ hotel across from the Dow, as many people walk on those sidewalks. Eric is right---it no longer matters whose job it is. Just get it done.
PS--I have seen many ladies come close to slipping and falling on the walks in front of the Dow since the "improvements". A lawsuit waiting to happen.

If someone buys me a brand new snowblower (and gas for said snowblower) & shovel, and provides the salt, and a pair of season tickets, I will be down there before each game getting the job done myself!!! Bill, how about it? haha! This offer would have to be renegotiated each season, but it's on the table!

A lawsuit waiting to happen. That's probably what it will take to get the job done. I'm sure the Dow, SMG will say it's a city issue, and it probably is. Seems to me last year a women slipped in the street and was injured? I couldn't believe the sidewalks weren't shoveled yesterday. That negligence is going to end up costing them.

i understood last year a little because it was an insane amount of snow in a short time but come on, I think the city could do a little more around the only bright spot in downtown on most nights.

he's done a fine job, however, the other guy that can get stuff done (or answered) is Billy K...
******SENDING OUT THE BAT-SIGNAL FOR BILL KONESKO******
Bill, is there anything that can be done about the sidewalks or is it simply a city problem that we should write a letter about. I'm always an advocate of letter writing because it's dated and in print but if you are able to head straight to the top, i'll skip it.

I've been trading e-mails with my wife and she said the sidewalks were fine on Sunday. At least the one from the bus station across the street just east of the Event Center to the Atrium. Believe me, if it was bad she would have told me because she had her 76 year old mother with her.

Believe me, if it was bad she would have told me because she had her 76 year old mother with her. It's not like there was 4 inches of it, but the little coating that was there was slippery with the fake brick concrete. I parked behind the international center and walked up that way and it was slippery from the North end of the center to the Dow parking lot. My wife is preggo so I dropped her off at the door but she insisted on walking back to the car with me after the game, she looked like a penguin. The City should be responsible for the sidewalks directly adjacent to and parallel with the roads (within the right of way) the County or SMG would then be responsible for any sidewalks on their property.

Sorry....I heard rumors that the bat signal was out but I couldn't see it with all the snow flying around...but I guess thats the problem huh?! Answering previous comments on this thread, the issue with plowing snow is up to both the county and SMG, pending the particular area that needs to be plowed. For example, last I heard Johnson Street along the stretch of the DEC is up to SMG, but Franklin is covered by the county. Anywho, I can assure you that this is a VERY BIG concern of the team, and has been for awhile now. We actually were in the process of implementing a plan last season that ended up not being inacted because (1) it stopped snowing and (2) other things started melting...= We have a staff meeting tomorrow morning....and I will bring this up to see where we are at this season...and sometime by the end of the week I'll hope back on here and let you all know whats up. Enjoy the snow...and if anyone is bored swing by the tittabawassee Meijer store tonight from 6-8...I'll be there with Comrie and Szwarz for a public appearance! Bill
