Thanks for the link to that article. It had a lot of good info in it. First of all, the ice making equipment in the DEC has been running on life support since the renovations were made. You can tell in the fall and spring, the ice hardly freezes after the resurfacing. The last couple of games (where it has been warm out) the ice has been wet after resurfacing. There have been instances where the compressors failed in the middle of the night and had to have "band aids" installed just to play a game the next day. Seriously, this needs to be done. Anyone still have a refridgerator / freezer from 1970 in their house???
Wow, I had no idea the facility was that far in the red. It's as bad if not worse than when the city ran it. So why do we have a professional company doing it if they can't put us in the black?
Is everyone satisfied with SMG? I'm not. I do not see much of an increase in events, especially "big name" events. I don't think most of the ushers do their jobs, and lets talk about the snow on the sidewalks...again. If I were running that arena, I would have a guy not only shoveling the spots the plows miss on the event center property, but I'd have him clearing those bumps of snow we have to walk over at every sidewalk ramp. I don't think the Zamboni drivers know what they are doing, they can't seem to resurface that ice one time without having to go back and catch a small strip. As much as I would like to see that $500 G's for the ice system, I think the county needs to get new bids.

It's been pretty cold in the arena at the games I've been to recently.
As for SMG, I think it might help if they advertised upcoming events on the radio or TV. I didn't even know the Globetrotters were going to be here until they started giving away tickets on teh radio.

Cold in the arena = make up for ice system not working. If an ice making plant and it's associated system are working properly, the ambient temperature in the arena can be 55 degrees for at least 6 hours with out it having an affect on the ice. The reason it's so cold, is SMG has to run the AC to keep the temperature down so the ice will not deteriorate beyond playing capabilities.
The globetrotters were here?

I've never understood why the ice plant wasn't upgraded when the DEC was redone back in 2001-2002. It was 30 years old at that point. Oh, well. Shoulda, coulda, woulda.

I really hope they can fix the ice issues. In my opinion this HAS to come before they do any other upgrades, like a new video scoreboard and suites which have both been discussed in the past. I know this spring/summer they'll have the Sting and some religious groups coming in that will fill a lot of dates, so the workers will need to install it quickly before the 09-10 season starts. Like the article says, it's something that can't be done over the night. It takes weeks to do install everything properly.

The ice stayed in for the circus and the recent bull riding thing. This is quite normal in larger venues; I'm surprised they did it here. However, with the time between Wed. night’s game and the next home game, they should have had plenty of time to do it. Johnt, that's a good question, I thought the same thing. Here's my take on it: This I know; the county hired a local Engineering firm to go through the facility with a fine tooth comb and report on everything that a). absolutely needed to be done, b). should be done and c). they would like to do. The ice system was checked and was functioning so I'm thinking (I can’t remember) it was on the "c" list and was low on that list. Shortly after the facility opened and the Spirit took to the ice, that equipment which ran for maybe a day or two during the assessment started nonstop operation for the duration of a hockey season and the bugs came out. I'm just surprised it took this long to get something going with it. After the first two playoff appearances it was obvious this system would not have the ability to work well in the spring. Remember, soft ice is horrible for playing hockey, when you see the guys playing and there is water on the ice, you’re beyond soft ice.
