The Wings returned Tom McCollum to the OHL for his overage season a few years ago. I wouldn't say it is 100% he won't be returned to OHL. But I guarantee he won't play for Saginaw again. You bring up a good point. If any "signed" overage player is returned by the NHL club to major junior, more often than not, it's going to be a goaltender. Mostly because there are fewer places for goaltenders than any other position. Not sure what the situation was back then, but I do know what the situation is this year and there is a spot open in the ECHL for Jake. With the Blackhawks not sending a goalie to Toledo this year it opens up a spot for Jake. It has been made pretty clear that the folks in Detroit want Jake to start his pro career sooner rather than later. There was actually a better than average chance that Jake would end up in Grand Rapids this season. The Red Wings were considering moving Mrazek up to the NHL club for this season, but decided to sign Gustavsson to a one year deal so Mrazek could have one more season in Grand Rapids. The bottom line here is that the Wings just aren't very deep at the goaltender position. I'm not saying that the possibility does not exist that Jake will be returned to the "O", I'm saying the possibility is pretty remote. We should know sooner rather then later on this one. On a side note, it's good to be talking about hockey again. It is also refreshing to share different opinions without tossing jabs at each other. There is a good reason the Blackhawks won't be sending a goalie to Toledo, they aren't affiliated with the Walleye anymore. Put me on the bus that believes Jake will be in the ECHL this season.

I say Paterson is in Saginaw next week. Spirit will be young and fun to watch.

I highly doubt that...he'll most likely be in Traverse City for the main training camp next week and then he's probably headed to Griffin's training camp unless they send him right down to Toledo. We're not going to see Jake here unless he's doing really crappy in Toledo or something weird happens. The frequency that the Wings' goalies get hurt pretty much dictates that the need to have decent goalies in the system (as bp alluded to I think) so when Howard goes down (which he will), Gustavson moves to #1, Mrazek moves to backup, McCollum starts in GR and either Jake or the other guy will back up in GR which means the other one will start in Toledo. Based on recent history, there may actually be a higher chance of Jake being in GR all season versus the OHL. Time will tell. Hockey at the Dow in a week...CAN'T WAIT!

I went to the Prospects tourney in Traverse City on Monday and Tuesday. Jake played on Tuesday for the Red Wings. I watched two periods and to say he was awful would be giving him way too much credit. He allowed 3 goals on 6 shots. The second goal was a simple wrist shot that he misplayed right to a Hurricane player who easily slid it home. He was not very good. His confidence looked very shaky.
So I still think the Wings would be better served sending him back. The Spirit will trade him and he can lead a team that has aspirations. He'll benefit more playing here than in the ECHL.

While it would be swell to have Paterson back, either as an asset to be utilized or an asset to be moved for something, has anyone considered the possibility that sending him back to junior would put him in the wrong frame of mind? If he is somewhat capable, but sending him to junior would shatter his confidence, then it would be better for his development to back up in the ECHL vs. play in the OHL. The Red Wings have to first and foremost consider what is best for his development. I am not saying anything about the Spirit goaltending coach because (1) I have no idea who the Spirit goaltending coach is, and (2) I have no idea how good or not good the Spirit goaltending coach is at being a goaltending coach, but in Toledo Jake would be in the Wings farm system and would have the coaching of someone in the Wings system, which is probably better for the Wings.
He's signed, the spot is there, I don't expect him back, even if he is only going to the ECHL to back up.

I don't know if even the best goalie coach could ever get into the mind of a goalie...they seem more fragile than relief pitchers, kickers, and all the other mental midgets of the sports world. Probably why you always see a hot goalie in the NHL playoffs carry a team from the 7th seed to a Stanley Cup when they couldn't find the puck in the regular season. It will be interesting to see (1) if he wins a starting spot in Toledo (which puts him 1st in line to get moved up to GR) and (2) what the Wings feel is best for his development.

I've said it once and I will say it again. He will be a career ECHL player.

I'm wrong and surprised. Now let's see who wants to over pay for him. Maybe move him to Peterborough for 2 2nds and a prospect?
Just to be clear, anything more a single 3rd for him is overpayment IMO.

2% just happened. He is back. I'm always happy when I make a prediction and it comes true. I said there was a chance he would be back and now he's back. Note: It's always good to give yourself an out.

Appears that Toledo recently signed Jeff Lerg, a former goalie at Michigan State, which pushed Paterson back down to juniors. I can't imagine him staying in Saginaw very long, though. But then again, I wasn't expecting him back in the first place.

Note: It's always good to give yourself an out. Since you missed your prediction by a staggering 98%, I thought I'd point out that you only missed the prediction below by 50% which is a 48% improvement. Keep up the good work. Insert bpfox comment "I said CLOSE to 50% so 0 isn't too far away from 50" Granted I didn't think he would be back either but now that he is, maybe we should keep him since I think we need an older goalie anyway.
