I'm always happy when I make a prediction and it comes true. I said there was a chance he would be back and now he's back. Note: It's always good to give yourself an out. Since you missed your prediction by a staggering 98%, I thought I'd point out that you only missed the prediction below by 50% which is a 48% improvement. Keep up the good work. Insert bpfox comment "I said CLOSE to 50% so 0 isn't too far away from 50" Granted I didn't think he would be back either but now that he is, maybe we should keep him since I think we need an older goalie anyway. I've discovered over the years that it's much easier to predict the past than it is to predict the future. Maybe I need to change jobs. I know I can pitch just as badly as the Tigers bullpen and I'm willing to do it for a whole lot less money.

Now the tough decision needs to be made. Serebryakov has really struggled with the #1 position. Do the Spirit keep Paterson and let him backstop the team? He's a proven commodity in goal and he can help this team win games. Or do you deal him and acquire a young player and some picks and ride out the season with Serebryakov or someone else in goal?
There are a couple teams who have championship aspirations who he could help, most prominently being the Peterborough Petes. Rumors have been circulating that they are trying to make a deal with Owen Sound to acquire one of their goalies. IMO, any deal with Peterborough would have to include Anthony Stefano. The Spirit might also have to take someone like Michael Clarke. If so, they would cut ties with Luke Cairns up front I would think.
If they keep him, then I think Ringuette is the odd man out in the OA pool. He has struggled to start the year and I think the young guys need to play to develop.

I think eventually you have to trade him and try to get a big haul in return. In my eyes, we pretty much did a reboot on the team this year, and we've just been handed a very valuable asset to help us build. Paterson would help us win games, yes. But we are not a contender this year, even with him. Love Paterson, great kid and all, but we need to look toward the future.
I doubt Paterson is thrilled to be back in the OHL. Let him go to a top team and try to win a title. He's earned it.

I am deeply dismayed by anyone who seems "happy" to see Jake Paterson back in the OHL. We as fans should want to see players move onto the next level when they have the opportunity to do so. Whether it is playing in the NHL, AHL, or even ECHL, fans should want these guys to move on and succeed.
Obviously the Detroit Red Wings feel that the best opportunity for Paterson to get the maximum amount of playing time is by being back in the OHL. Paterson could have the chance to start 50+ games in the OHL. That in my opinion is an opportunity he would not have had in either Grand Rapids or Toledo.
Whether Paterson plays the entire season in Saginaw is up to both the Spirit franchise and Paterson himself. Paterson could ask for a trade to a contending franchise and make a deep playoff run and get additional playing time.

The other big question---if the Spirit end up not trading Paterson, which OA hits the road?

I don't think it was a question of the Red Wings thinking it would be better for him to be in the OHL, but more a case of one too many goalies. Since Toledo had already signed a goalie in the off season it meant cutting a guy to keep Jake. Since Jake still had junior eligibility, it was simply easier to send him back to juniors and kick the goalie decision down the road for one more year. It should be pointed out that when I made my 98% prediction I was not aware of Toledo's goalie signing. When it was 6 goalies for 6 spots it was pretty easy to predict that Jake would be playing pro this season. When it turned out to be 6 goalies for 5 spots, the math changed and Jake would have had to beat somebody out this year to the point that the Red Wings were willing to cut a guy. That didn't happen and as they say, the rest is history.

Keep in mind that if the Red Wings have a goalie injury anywhere in their system, from Howard on down to Lerg, they can call Jake up from the Spirit to fill the spot (or rather, he will get called to Toledo so the Toledo goalie can go to Grand Rapids and the Grand Rapids goalie can go to Detroit). They could also call him up because they may decide to trade one of the goalies in their system. Because he is an OA, he is not locked into playing junior for the whole season, and because he has a signed deal with the Wings, he can move up and down. The Spirit should be prepared for this contingency, although this just means finding a place for Osjannikov to play in the meantime. Or they can trade Jake and it becomes someone elses potential problem. However, I could see lots of conditionals involved in any trade involving Jake, assuming that the team we trade with has a smart GM.

If the Spirit deal Paterson, they need to upgrade in goal. Serebryakov has not shown the ability to be a reliable #1 goalie. I think a couple deals could alleviate problems, not only for the Spirit but for two other teams as well.
Deal #1
To Peterborough: Jake Paterson To Saginaw: Anthony Stefano, Michael Clarke, 2 2nd round draft picks
Spirit would take Clarke to get Petes down to 3 OA. Spirit would keep Clarke and Cairns up front, drop Ringuette on back end.
Deal #2
To Owen Sound: multiple 2nd round picks To Saginaw: Jack Flinn
OS has a young goalie named Michael McNiven they are looking to get some time for. They also have Brandon Hope, an OA goalie as well. Speculation is OS looking to move either Flinn or Hope. Hope does Spirit no good so get Flinn.
I see this as potentially working for all involved. Spirit would either keep Serebryakov to back up or cut him and run with Ovsjannikov as the backup.

They should move Patterson .. Patterson is no longer in the league. He left London to go home to the Soo to pursue an education.

Ok so I'll play keyboard GM for a moment:
To Erie: Jimmy Lodge To Saginaw: Cole Mayo, 2nd, cond 3rd
Makes Ringuette obsolete (well he already is but I digress)
To Barrie: Paterson, 4th To Saginaw: Daniel Gibl, Jonathan Laser, 7th
Serebryakov is cut and Laser allows for Middleton to be sent down to fine tune his game like Crawford.

Toledo doesn't play again until next Friday...I bet they'll wait to see what Howard's status is after the 48 hours and if he's still out I bet Jake takes a little trip down US-23 to Toledo for a few days at least.
