If they'd try, they'd get more support. They didn't look like they were trying last night. Plain and simple.

This game was over before it even began. I could tell during the national anthems it would not end well for the Spirit. How? you ask. Well, I will finally share with you the top secret way of determining the outcome of a Spirit game BEFORE it begins.
Several years ago, a friend and I were at a game, my friend says to me during the anthems, "we're gonna lose tonight" "why do you say that" I replied. "well, " okay, enough of the quotes, my friend went on to explain that over the previous 3 or four games he had been watching the players on both benches during the anthems. the amount of side to side movement or "weeble" (remember the weebles wobble but they don't fall down?) indicated the relationship to how hard they were going to play that night. A heavy weeble factor, lots of side to side movement, meant a strong game, lots of energy and good solid checking, while a low weeble factor meant they were just going through the motions. We have followed this pattern ever since and 95% of the time it works! Last night the guys had a decent weeble factor, problem was, the Soo had a much stronger weeble factor. Try it tonight and see if it works.
Combs is MIA, last time I knew he was in the penalty box. Is there beer in there or something, cause he sure spends a lot of time in there. I'm very disappointed in both combs and McDonnough. They are the proverbial leaders of this team and neither one has done much these playoffs. I know, McD had a few goals in the Soo, but I still don't see the leadership.
Weren't the tables turned last year? weren't we supposed to be the better team and still got bounced by SSM? Granted there is a big difference between 2nd place / 7th place and 4 place / 5th place. As the underdog this year I thought this team would go out and battle the big bad SSM, after all, we have played hard against the big teams this year.
I remember a game against the whalers that had three whalers in the box, the video screen put up the hug cam on the three and the guy in the middle put his arms around his mates and gave them a big hug, I thought that was hilarious and that it showed good sportsmanship. Since it was Plymouth, I'm sure they were up by a few goals then too.

Pardon me eric, where have you been all season. "If they'd try, they'd get more support" This team was expected to go nowhere, not make the playoffs, and barely win games, yet they finish 7th and are playing one of the top teams in the playoffs. So tell me again that they're not trying? Ridiculous. Our team is simply a little overwhelmed with Soo's talent. I'll say that maybe the Spirit didn't play their best last night, however I think our team has nothing to be ashamed of this season. The Soo has come to win and they are a different team in the playoffs than they were in the regular season, plain and simple.
Our team could be playing for the Mem Cup and our rink and fans would still be like attending a funeral. Our rink's noise level is a joke... Lets give out a free piece of pizza every minute and there would be some noise...Simply a disgrace.
I don't think Daniels played "horrible" last night. No one came to play..No offense..and barely any defense..The soo comes out strong and hard the entire game and if we give them any margin they capitalize on it. Neither one of our goaltenders was great last night, however 9 times outta 10 Daniels has been there to hold us in most games this season. So why would you go with a tender who has been playing against Erie all season, and being pulled against teams that are better such as Plymouth? Our team is nothing great, and I think we owe alot of our wins and our 7th place finish to Daniels. Yet, so many of you bash him all the time.. I don't get this. He's the glue that has held this team together on and off the ice, he's a class act and very underrated. He won't be back next season, so why don't we show this guy a little support tonight. Daniels deserves the start tonight for sure, let him play his possible last game in the OHL, and let Pasquale have the glory next season. Hopefully Pasquale will be better than this season, if not I can't wait to hear the chirps on him this coming year..should be interesting considering how much you all think hes the "next best thing for our team."

I think our team is great, we've beaten other "great" teams. We played well the first two games, lost by one. Last night was the only night that was bad. Daniels does get a lot of credit from me, however a goalie does not make an entire team and I disagree with you that we got to 7th place all because of one person.

In regards to the "if they'd try comment," I was talking about last night, not all season.
I agree our building is quiet, but it has been louder this year than it has been all six years the Spirit have been here. I've been very impressed. Now, I have only been to one away game, in Plymouth, and the Saginaw fans were louder than the Whalers fans (we were also winning), so I don't have any experience as to how loud the other buildings are to compare it to. I do know that even though it'd be harder to get a ticket, I would like to see our building FULL for the playoffs, like others in the league, and it is extremely disappointing they can't even sell out a Saturday night game.
I still think Daniels is better than Pasquale, I think he's one of the better goalies in the league. If he came back next season, I'd be happy, although I think that's unlikely. However, he played bad last night. So did the team, I agree with you.

And I have not seen the effort I saw in the regular season, and it is disappointing. You are agreeing with me. Once again--the Soo has taken their game up a notch for the playoffs. Saginaw is still playing regular season hockey.

The biggest factor in our continued losing to the Hounds this year is our lack of offense on the PP. We had multiple man-advantages last night and couldn't convert. Well I think we had 1 powerplay goal but the passing was horrible and it seemed like none of our D could hold the line. Why can't we get traffic in front and just snap it to the front of the net. Maybe we'd be able to chip in a goal or two. Breen takes way too long to wind up and shoot. Sinfield was slow to the puck. It was just a grade "D" effort overall from the defense last night. Hopefully tonight will have a better result.

I don't think our D could keep a beach ball in the zone, let alone a hockey puck. They don't even TRY to keep it in. Comrie was the only one I saw all night last night that kept the puck in, two times in a row, on the power play. That was it. Gotta do better than that.
Also, I hate to sit here and bash the team, because I really think they're a great team, and definitely above expectation. However, last night was pretty rough.

Beach ball, hea, I like that. When I coached pee wee hockey, we actually let the team play with a beach ball for fun in a practice during Thanksgiving time when half the team was missing. It's actually harder cause the beach ball bounces right over your stick. But I got the mental picture you were trying to paint.
Spiritfan8: Yes in a way I was agreeing with you, but I was also making a point that we can't beat the Soo in the playoffs weather we're the underdog or the favored team. My point was also that a weaker team (the soo last year) came out and put away the more talented team. What do we do when we're the underdog? absolutely nothing. Last night was the first game we breached the 30 shot mark. I know, I know the shots stat is highly overrated. But it really says something when you only get 4 in the first period, especially when Watson made it clear the first period was the most important period.

SOG may be overrated, but there is no overrating the negative impact of 4 SOG in the first period. Everyone in the BLC before the game heard Watson say how important the first period was. Anyone who LISTENED to any of the first two games knew how important the first period was. And they actually played worse than they did the first two games. No excuses. As for last year--I loved last year's team, and I haven't been one of the fans bad mouthing their effort or anything else. But I would suggest that part of their problem last year against the Soo was the same thing as this year's team. They either didn't or couldn't play the game that it's necessary to play in the playoffs, and the Soo did. The common denominator there is Hartsburg, and I think he has to be given the credit for it. Maybe we'll get lucky and an NHL team will offer him a job! (Although even that wouldn't guarantee him leaving. He's on record as liking the Soo.....)
