I do not support any union especially one for millionaire athletes. Just my opinion ;D It's not a true union like the UAW or Steelworkers IMO. The players want the best of both worlds. They want to bargain collectively for various benefits BUT they don't want their wages collectively bargained for. They get to negotiate their own wages independantly of the collective bargaining process. If it's a true union then wages need to be bargained for collectively, not on an individual basis. That is what a cap essentially does.

how is someone like hatcher going to play against someone who is just out of ohl league(sturgeon)? so hatch and sturgeon go to the boards for a puck and hatch slams sturgy. jeez, splat, sturgeon is done for the season. Now, im not saying sturgeon is weak. im saying he isnt big as or strong as hatch. hasnt been in the nhl and played with the same caliber of hockey players....anyone wanna discuss this ??

I wouldn't call those players scabs, but I do think Jim makes some valid points about displacing players at the UHL level. I think that is wrong. I agree with this opinion, and was surprised to read this morning that no players have been displaced. You can read the Detroit News article at www.detnews.com/2005/wings/0502/02/A01-77565.htm

They won't lose a roster spot but guess who won't be dressing for games when Hatcher and company are in the lineup??

I just wanted to chime in on this topic because it seems to be getting a little too serious. I believe it was in an ESPN article (probably AP) that showed the analogy that the UHL is comparable to Single A Baseball, which it is. Put yourself in the GM's shoes...you are in last place and you have the opportunity to do a PUBLICITY STUNT and sell out the rest of your games. People in these leagues do publicity stunts any time and I do not have a problem with it and may even go watch them.
Who everybody should really be upset with is Chris Chelios because he had a verbal commitment to play for the Chicago Wolves of the AHL and is now backing out for a publicity stunt. If he really truly wanted to stay in shape, he could play in his hometown in a step below the NHL.
Sports (including minor leagues) are a business and if existing players are bumped to bring better ones in, so be it. As a wise man once told me..."Don't hate the player, hate the game."

Interesting......I wonder how the Chelios/Wolves relationship would have worked contractually since the Red Wings affiliate in the AHL is the Grand Rapids Griffins?? The Chicago Wolves are the AHL affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers.

I agree 100%. This is a great move for the Mechanics, both on the ice and off. When your team is dead last in the standings and in attendence, you have to do something. I believe Chelios is currently an NHL free agent, so it didn't really matter who he played for in the AHL.

I assume that is a ;D "sell out" ;D at the Perani Arena?? Flint beat the Mechanics 5-1. I only heard Hatcher's name mentioned during the web broadcast so I'm guessing that Chelios and Draper did not play tonight.

So many quotes to respond to, I'll start with this one: Hatcher scored the Mechanics goal, but was on the ice for three Gens goals. ;D Must be a bit humbling when your an NHL top caliber defenseman and your on the ice for three goals against a UHL team. Next, MidlandSpiritFan Good points! I agree, but that's what makes it worse, the best of both worlds! Does anyone know who owns the Detroit UHL team? Could it be a friend of the guys and they are doing a favor?
