Ok, I went to the game tonight. It was interesting going back into that old barn. Nice to see a sold out game there for once. A LOT of people were being turned away at the door trying to get tickets. A lot of MAD fans.
Well, I have to say - and this hurts A LOT TO SAY - but the UHL has improved it's play significantly since Saginaw had a team there! It was quite a bit slower than the OHL, but overal, not bad hockey (like it used to be!).
Hatcher - the crowd was split regarding him. 50/50. Some hecklers, some supporters. At the end of the 2nd period he scooped up the puck & went over & tossed it up to a group of people wearing Red Wings jerseys. That was cool.
Hatcher seemed BORED out there! He showed absolutely NO emotion whatsoever! He hasn't played in a long time & said on the news that he was rusty, but he still hung with the other players. He had a few really good bone-jarring hits (& it looked like he didn't have to exurt too much energy to do it - he actually held up on several big hits!). I think he was just out there getting his legs back. His goal was nice - he snuck in from the point on the right side & the puck came to him & he just buried it. The only goal for Motor City.
All-in-all, it was a pretty unevenful game. Hatcher was just another player on the ice.
Kris Draper was also there at the game. Spent quite a long time signing what had to be a hundred or more autographs. Seemed very approachable. The fans were loving that!
Oh, and it was funny to see a now completely bald John Blum (former Lumberkings-? coach) there as an assistant coach with Motor City. He seemed feisty as always.
Anyway, we had fun at the game. I got some good pictures of Hatcher, as well as Adam Sturgeon. Sturgeon played really solid tonight. He is a top-4 defenseman, I believe, for Flint. He seemed very comfy out there. It was cool seeing him out on the ice at the same time as Hatcher. Sturgeon looks like he has really caught on in Flint. It was nice seeing him play again. He was always in the right place at the right time tonight, anticipated the play well, & made no mistakes.
The media circus was pretty funny, too! Walking up to the building from the parking lot you had to negotiate your way through what had to be 10 or 12 news vans! It was crazy!
Well, that's all I can think of for now.
