Webster's defines "investment" as:
"The outlay of money usually for income or profit"
Just sayin'.

I guess I play the "semantics" game just like anyone else. So guilty as charged. But not a soul doesn't know what I meant. People have limited entertainment dollars and they can spend that on going to the county fair, movies, concerts, the Spirit, DVDs, etc.
Less people spent money on the Spirit last season. Even less will this year, it may be the economy being awful (not just sluggish, but awful) is the biggest reason. But maybe some think the team should be a contender and it isn't. It doesn't necessarily stop me from going and I love that BP has great passion for the sport and the league. I do as well. But he's also right in that we're in the vast minority...
A lot of folks go just to "go" and a lot just go because they hope the home team will win. If you do very little winning when it matters which this franchise has excelled at, sooner or later, the bandwagon potential dries up and people stop coming. Someone referenced the Tigers attendance. Yes...it's up because they were supposed to be a World Series contender. When they absolutely stunk, even at the new park, tickets weren't hard to find.

All great points, I will take all the information and formulate my own decisions. Thank you to everyone for their imput........
With that I will be going to some games when high profile players come to town even if it bothers some people on here that don't think I'm a good enough fan to go. Sorry........

Update on first round signings (player signings being this thread's original topic):
As far as I can tell, 4 first round picks remain unsigned: Spooner of Peterborough, Carrick of Brampton, Saad of Saginaw and Fowler of Windsor.
UPDATE: Make that 3 unsigned picks--Carrick (brother of Soo Hound Jake Carrick) signed w/ Brampton 8/28.

"Unless you are Richard Garber or Craig Goslin you have not invested one cent of your money on this hockey team."
Less true words have never been typed. But Richard & Craig appreciate your sentiment. How insulting. People's entertainment dollars have dwindled, gas is more expensive, food is more expensive. So people WILL be cutting back and they already are.
Sorry my friend, but my words are 100% accurate. Your words on the other hand have nothing to do with this discussion and are not 100% accurate. Peoples entertainment dollars have not dwindled. Peoples spending power has dwindled and they will have to make some hard choices where they spend thier disposable income. I would suspect many will cut back on entertainment of all kinds not just Spirit hockey. That said, these many posts would have you believe it's because the Spirit suck not the fact that they have less money available for entertainment and as such will be attending fewer games. This is true even if the Spirit were the number one team in the league. It is also a moot point in rebuttle to what I wrote since I never claimed attendence would be up or down.
Why don't you GUARANTEE me that attendance will be higher this year than it was either of the last 2 years? Oh, ok. Not so sure? I understand.
Why on earth would I do that? I only guarantee what I know to be true and possible. I doubt very much that attendance will be up in fact I can almost guarantee that it will be lower. Point out for me please anything in any of my post that would have led you to believe otherwise.
I love the product and love the league, but I dumped my season tickets after the 2006-07 season, because I figured I would go 15-16 times instead of 30-34. And if this team is as good as I think it's going to be, clawing tooth and nail just to make the playoffs, then I'll go 10-12 times. I can buy the entire NHL package on DirecTV or watch more OHL games online for the cost it takes for me to take my family of four there 5 times. Sorry -- but that's money they lose at the gate, and I'm one of hundreds who has scaled back when it comes to Saginaw Spirit hockey.
I love the product too. For me, there is not better entertainment option and that includes all of the things you mention. Count me in the group who will not be cutting back on Spirit Hockey this season. I expect to attend at least 40 games this season. Just so you know, I don't smoke and I don't drink so I spend that money on hockey instead.
"The Saginaw Spirit have done nothing but bring entertaining hockey to Saginaw for 6 years, now, all of a sudden, the 7th year is not going to be worth your investment."
So you say we're not investing, now we are. It's a contradiction in terms. Anything one spends money on is considered an investment.
Not contradiction here what so ever. See the word "your" in my quote? It's in reference to the original posters use of the word investment. I think we can all pretty much agree now that it's not an investment when you purchase a hockey ticket. End of lesson.
But your post was an all-out assault on those who are being objective and wishing we could be more positive about what I see on and off the ice with this team. But the days of it being a "novelty" have long worn off. It's awesome we have a franchise in our area. It's not so awesome that the team has provided very few landmark or "special" moments in six years on the ice. Yes, you can pick out a few. But a few is not enough over the course of playing almost 440 games counting the playoffs. No division titles. Two playoff wins. It's not good enough. Not in a league where 80 percent of teams make the playoffs.
Not even close. As a customer, I'm allowed to ask for more.
I didn't assault anybody. Unlike you, hockey has never been a novilty for me. Every game is exciting. If you don't like watching the development of future NHL stars, then there is not much I can do to help. I will miss you at the games. Peace

Can someone please explain to me why, after reading the various economic diatribes of the last 2 pages, that this thread is titled "Player Siginings" ? This reminds me of university on the first day of school where you have your timetable, you walk into a class half-way only to find out you are taking Economics and you signed up for Auto Mechanics.

Agree to disagree. And other than what's below, I'll leave it at that.
I'm still going to the games and am just as much an OHL fan as you are. But again, I feel I'm quite objective about the Spirit, and you are less so. That's your decision.
But you're not going to guilt me or shame me into suggesting that the Spirit have even remotely met expectations on the ice and there's only been one constant since the team got here. And it's not the popcorn.
They're less of a league-wide joke than they were, but I see this team like the Lions. As long as William Clay Ford owns the team, they won't make the Super Bowl, and I feel the same about this ownership group and the OHL Finals. Call me what you want, but there's been FAR more evidence to support my side that they'll never make the OHL Finals tthan the other side. You might think a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. I'm betting against it and as a Saginaw Spirit fan, that makes me sad.

Read my post that was two before yours......that's 2 posts, not two pages. Threads always meander and mutate. That seems to bother a lot of people. I think the mutations are often more interesting and informative than the original subject. But to each his own.

So there seems to be no mention of out overage goaltender Ryan Daniels in any of the Saginaw News articles ..
Have any fellow spirit fans heard any rumblings or any information on how Daniels is doing in camp or anything? I saw this because there has been a couple articles about the camp, normally Constantine includes Daniels tradeability in every article so just looking for a little info ...

I respect everyone's opinions in regards to the Spirit.
I don't want to put words in BP's mouth, and to piggyback on what was previously mentioned, the "entertainment" issue not only lies with the Spirit. Granted, I would like the Spirit to win more. But, I look just as forward to seeing stars such as Stamkos, Kane, Gagner, Little, Wolski, Matthias, etc. I know they absolutely killed us when we played them, but the talent these individuals possess is very impressive. They are the players we will be watching on TV in future years in the NHL.
I don't see how what BP says makes him less objective on the Spirit than anyone else. I am in the same boat as BP. I believe that this team will excel. As of right now I don't see why they can't. WE HAVEN'T EVEN PLAYED A GAME YET!!! As I have said before, I wish to focus on those players who want to play here. And I believe in Todd Watson. This team will be ready come opening night, in whatever form they may be in on 9/17.
And newguy, real fans don't leave their team's "bandwagon." You grin and bear it and revel when the team wins. If people want to bail now, I don't particularly want them back as fans once this team proves they can win. I get frustrated watching the team play, don't get me wrong, and many times I have questioned why I purchase my tickets, but I always come back to the fact that these are kids giving their all, and I cannot wait for the day when we will raise the championship trophy high.
Sorry if I offend anyone, but this is what I think.

Someone wrote in this thread that they are going to really enjoy re-visiting this thread in March. So I decide to go back and read some old threads and came up with some interesting stuff..
The following quotes were found in just one thread...
"Are you content to just put butts in the seats? I for one would prefer this team makes an attempt to build a winner."
"If you people are happy to just put butts in seats then so be it, I for one would like to see a winner"
"But please don't get down on me because I choose to set a higher standard for myself and what I expect from management. When they make a good move I praise them, when I think they made a mistake, I call them on it."
Some good interesting stuff, it just goes to show that people's views and values can change.................

Thus the importance of the draft and then getting kids to report. Just wish it would happen here, but I don't want to open that can of worms again.

Someone didn't write that it is going to be interesting revisiting this thread in March, I wrote it. And you know I wrote it, so why be so mysterious. I also find it interesting the quotes you chose. I can't say for sure but at least two of them also seem to be mine. And then you go on to make the comment that people's views and values can change. I know I haven't changed mine. The quotes of mine that you have used are just as valid now as they were then, so what's your point?
