Ok, I get it now, They should use one of their two 1st rd picks to pick someone that will not report so the next year they get two picks again and do it every year. Genius. Come on IGive, I know you are smarter than that. I'm going to write if off as being the off season and you are not quite up to season form. I don't think anybody is suggesting that any team use their first round pick on somebody they know for sure won't show up just so they can get an extra first round pick. And I think you know that too. Sometimes you can pick somebody that you know won't show an it works out pretty good. (Brandon Saad) Edwards big mistake that year was not picking someone in the Second Round who already had his bags packed and his ticket punched for a one way trip to Saginaw. You also know the new OHL rules were put into place so teams would not get burned by drafting the best player available when it was their turn to pick. Unlike other years, there was no indication he would not report at the time he was drafted. The bottom line is, we don't want any player who does not want to be here. We own his rights and a team that wants him, or should I say a team that he want's is going to have to pay. It's not a perfect system, but it a damn site better than the way it used to be. All people are saying is "It's not the end of the world" and they are saying that because of the make up of this years team. And you know what, I think they are right. And more thing I know that you know and that is I'm always right. Have a great summer.

The rule also gives more power to the drafting team IF the player really wants to play in the OHL.
Let's say Felhaber is OHL or bust but he only will play for London, Kitchener or Guelph.
The Spirit can say that the asking price is a young player and 2 2nd round picks. London, Kitchener and Guelph may say "heck no, we're not going to pay that" and tell Felhaber that if you want to play OHL, it's going to be for the Spirit.
That's probably a rare situation and it would probably take an NHL team telling a kid that you need the OHL over another league or maybe a parent played in the OHL or something like that but it's way more possible now than under the past rules where the player would drop down the draft because teams were scared to draft him.

It's pretty much been a given that Felhaber wasn't coming--first round picks don't wait til late summer to sign. At least not in the OHL. It's not an ideal situation--and to be blunt, one has to wonder how much the death of Terry Trafford and all its questions impacted players and their families around the league, because warranted or not, the Spirit took a lot of heat for it. It NEVER looks good when a team's first round pick chooses not to report, whatever the reason. That said, the new rules do greatly decrease the hit to a team when this happens--assuming the Spirit don't botch the trade and/or the draft picks...

A quick question. Felhaber can only be traded for picks unless we hold onto him til the trade deadline. But say we get 4 picks for him Initially. Then say we trade a couple of those picks back for a player from that same team.
As an example:
To the Petes-Felhaber To Saginaw-3 2nds and a 3rd
Then
To Petes-2nd, 3rd To Saginaw-Anthony Stefano
So in effect the trade would be:
To Petes-Felhaber To Saginaw-Stefano, 2 2nds
This seems like a loop hole to getting a player in return for Felhaber but I'm not sure if the league looks down upon this type move or if it's even allowed. Anyone know if this would be possible?

So sorry I made you wait this long, especially since you were looking forward to it, so here goes. Unlike most folks here, I believe the Spirit will make the playoffs this season and I give them a better than average chance to make it to the second round. So there you go, have a great summer.

I read some scuttlebutt today on a random hockey board that Felhaber is not going to report to Saginaw. I don't know if I'm in the minority but I actually think this is a good thing. We'll get an additional 1st rounder next year and we'll also be able to trade him to where he wants to go and get players and/or picks for him. As I've said before, I don't think we're going to be very good this year and grabbing 2 1st rounders next year will be very beneficial for us in the long run. I thought about this before. Next year, we can draft two 1st round picks that also will not report, four the following year, and eight after that. So the 5-year plan would be to have 16 first round picks in 2019. I sure wish the region was more like London (large fan base, televised games due to sellouts, etc.). I doubt the Knights Front Office ever worries if their 1st round pick will show up or not. This is like the "Bill and Ted's" paradox. Bill: Ted, while I agree that, in time, our [team] will be most triumphant. The truth is, [Saginaw Spirit] will never be a super [team] until we have [great players] on [the roster]. Ted: Yes, Bill. But, I do not believe we will get [great players] until we have a [huge crowds at the Dow]. Bill: Ted, it's pointless to have [huge crowds at the Dow] before we even have decent [seasons]. Ted: Well, how can we have decent [seasons] when we don't really even have [awesome talent] to play? Bill: That is why we NEED [great players]! Ted: And THAT is why we need [huge crowds at the Dow].

Regarding the Felhaber situation, there is another option for the Spirit. Do what Hounds GM Kyle Dubas did when Sergey Tolchinsky's agent Igor Larionov insisted that the Soo trade the recently drafted Sergey to a team of his choosing. Dubas said "NO!" and stated that if Tolchinsky wanted to play in the OHL, he would have to report to the Soo. Result - Tolchinsky fired Igor, reported to the Hounds, and has had an outstanding career up there.
Not saying this could happen, but it is an option for the Spirit.

If the Spirit do not trade Felhaber by early Sept. they lose the extra 1st rd pick for next year, so it a BIG gamble.

Congrats to Mitchell Stephens as he made the cut and will be representing team Canada at the Ivan Hlinka tourney.
