All I can say is this is a day that never should have come, because he never should have been hired in the first place.
It was a disastrous move. A panic move, and without question, the worst and potentially, most costly decision the franchise has ever made.
Not because of wins and losses, per se, but because of credibility. I want you people to listen to me (Bill Clinton, 1998): any credibility the organization had built up, which I feel was a significant amount by the end of the 2007 season, was absolutely tossed out the door by the Sheldon Ferguson/Don Edwards fiasco.
They showed 3 absolutely fantastic hockey people the door in one form or another in Mancini, Herbers, and Camp -- and brought in a completely unqualified, arrogant, obnoxious, unstable boor.
I could go on and on and on about Edwards. I won't. But he was bad in so many ways, and has tried to personally and professionally undermine everything good that "we the people" feel this organization does and should believe in. The Spirit are starting from GROUND ZERO in the OHL in terms of credibility. Believe me when I say that. But with the right moves, that will change.
I have taken so much crap and abuse from people who think I'm "negative" and not a "glass half-full"person, but it's not the time to say, "I told you so" and "You were wrong, and MANY of us were right". The many that some of you tried to stifle, get to shut up, backstab, and the like. We knew this guy was bad news and the organization after 15 harrowing months confirmed it. I take no pleasure in being right. And now I hope they make the right moves and prove me wrong.
What some of you who've bashed me and others (like spiritfan, igive1, mccartysux, and jrp) on here couldn't possibly understand is that this isn't just about wins and losses. This is about how my favorite hockey team is perceived. You'd have to have your head in the sand not to know what a mockery the team became with Edwards. His botched trades which have infuriuated his bosses to no end. His disgraceful public attempts to humiliate Todd Watson, who risked a certain promotion at Plymouth to move his wife and four young kids to a different city, with different friends and different schools.
His rude and grating behavior towards fellow Spirit employees. His egotistical and demeaning attitude towards anyone who he felt like knew less about hockey than he did. That included...everyone.
What you'll read in the paper is just the start of it. The misconduct, blatant disregard for common decency among his co-workers, and the questionable way in which he at times, pretended he was scouting games, when he was actually off lining his pockets with the Spirit's money, ALL of it is a disgrace.
This lasted 15 months. And it was 15 months too long.
I ache for this team to win, and those of you who don't believe it -- fine! There are obviously more of us than "you" think. Don't think that us making noise, and saying this abomination of a GM had to be booted out, don't think that we didn't have some impact here. The fans have a voice. And some of us who used it in any way we could, even if it meant taking abuse, being mocked, and being basically called "non-fans", are proud if we had ANY part, even a miniscule one, in starting this franchise in what hopefully will be the right direction.
Good luck to Todd Watson and Dan Halliburton. Yes, they will need it. But I feel 100 times better about the Spirit and what they can do than I did 24 hours ago.
Maybe I don't speak the party line.
Maybe I don't buy what G&G try and sell me in the hockey sense.
Maybe I don't cheer for every little thing this team does, and ignore the deception, the lack of valor, and the credibility going down the drain of this franchise in the league. The credibility that ALL members of the Saginaw Spirit, from management to the stickboys worked so hard to build for the first five seasons. Again, I couldn't care less what some of the "happy fun ball" crowd think of me. I want this team to win. Now I can sleep well at night knowing the biggest obstacle to that has been removed.
Good luck to Richard and Craig in finding the right guy. Choose a bit more wisely this time. I mean that. No need for your choice to be the complete and total laughingstock of the league again. Picking someone who's seen an OHL game in the last 20 years wouldn't hurt.
Goslin and Garber want to win. I get that. I hope they learned a valuable lesson here. They got rid of Mancini and Herbers, who helped scrape this franchise, like gum off the bottom of the OHL's sneakers. Now they know - the grass is not always greener on the other side.
Good night and good luck.
