TIE BREAKING SYSTEM If two or more teams are tied for the final OHL playoff position in either conference, sudden-death playoff games will be used to determine the team that advances. For all other playoff positions, the following tie-breaking procedures are in place: 1. The team with the most number of wins during the regular season shall be declared higher in the standings. 2. If two teams are still tied, the team with the best record in head-to-head competition (based on points including overtime losses) shall be declared higher in the standings. If more than two teams are tied after the first tie-breaker, the percentage of available points earned in games among each other shall be used to determine the standing. 3. If still tied, the team with the greater differential between goals scored for and against by clubs having equal standing after the second tie-breaker shall be declared higher in the standings. SOURCE: ontariohockeyleague.com/playoffs/Yes, those are the tie breaker rules, thanks for posting them here, however, they don't answer SSF's question. His question was specifically about determining "home ice" for a playoff game if needed to determine 8th place. That issue is not specifically addressed in the published OHL Tie Breaker Rules. It is generally felt that the same tie breaker rules are used to determine home ice for the playoff game. I stated I wasn't 100% sure since I haven't been able to find it in writing on any official site. The point is kind of moot anyway since I pointed out before that it is not likely Owen Sound can catch Saginaw anyway. That said, I would still like to see something official to answer SSF's question with 100% accuracy. Peace.

Here is how things stand in the Western conference after tonight's games. Saginaw is now 11 points ahead of Owen Sound with 2 games in hand. The magic number for Saginaw to clinch the 8th playoff spot is down to 18 points. Any combination of Spirit points for and Owen Sound points lost totaling 18 points gives Saginaw the last spot outright. Saginaw's magic number coming into tonight's games was 21 and they picked up 3 of those points with their win over Erie and Owen Sound's shootout loss to Sarnia. Saginaw kept pace with Guelph and Sarnia who both won and picked up 2 points on Plymouth who lost.
Looks like Kitchener will get the #1 seed unless they completely fall apart. Windsor, Soo, and London are going to battle it out for the 2 through 4 slots. Sarnia, Plymouth, Guelph, and Saginaw are going to jockey for the 5th through 8th seeds with Owen Sound having an outside shot at getting the 8th seed.
1. Kitchener Rangers, 83 points, 40 wins, 16 games left (already clinched playoff spot) 2. Windsor Spitfires, 71 points, 31 wins, 14 games left 3. Soo Greyhounds, 70 points, 32 wins, 15 games left 4. London Knights, 67 points, 31 wins, 16 games left 5. Sarnia Sting, 62 points, 30 wins, 15 games left 6. Plymouth Whalers, 60 points, 29 wins, 15 games left 7. Guelph Storm, 59 points, 25 wins, 16 games left 8. Saginaw Spirit, 56 points, 25 wins, 16 games left ========================================================================== 9. Owen Sound Attack, 45 points, 20 wins, 14 games left 10. Erie Otters, 25 points, 11 wins, 15 games left (officially eliminated tonight with Saginaw's 5-1 win over the Otters)

Sunday's games of interest...
Plymouth at Kingston 2pm Guelph at Sault Ste. Marie 7pm
London and Windsor also have games tomorrow, but for now I think we should just focus on the 5-8 seeds.

As long as we are keeping track, tonight's win over Erie "officially" eliminated the Otters from the playoffs. They are the first team in the OHL to be eliminated. One down, one to go. Peace.

That 5 minute cut that starts out w/ Sladok and Stevens is great. I don't know what's funniest--the announcers going absolutely ballistic (until the fan gets involved, and then they switch to the pious "we can't condone this mode"!) or nobody seeming to notice that Plymouth has 7 skaters on the ice--AFTER Sladok and Hayes were sent to the box! Maybe if Stefan is back from suspension when we play Plymouth again, he and Watson can go. Maverty's a little old to be throwing down!!!!!

That's why I said "If he's back", SSF! I personally suspect that the OHL just issued that so that they could be their usual slow selves about announcing the final results of the numerous suspensions that are coming..............

I spend WAY too much time at the computer reading hockey-related happenings! I've often wondered why it's so easy for me to do that, and so hard to make myself keep up with my Continuing Education requirements annually, since they are much more important..........supposedly!
