The players you listed newguy were coming to a team that had a chance to win an OHL title. Who wouldn't want to play for a team when they are looked at as a team that could challenge for the title? Before that year there weren't many players who were excited about coming to play for Saginaw. Amazing what winning can do. But, the turmoil around this team, caused by Garber and Goslin not understanding to let the hockey people run the show and their ideas that people should have a good time at the game instead of worrying about winning doesn't make this a positive looking situation.
As for the drafting, there are major flaws in the drafting position in the league. When players can control where they go, that is wrong. There is no competitve balance in the league that way. Take Bobby Ryan, mentioned above. Besides off ice issues which Saginaw did not want to deal with, he told every team in the league with the exception of Owen Sound that he would not report if drafted and would go US college route. So, it was a "shock" when he was available for Owen Sound to draft in the first round, like 12-15 someplace, when he was the consensus second best player in the draft.
Or this year, Austin Watson, second round pick of the Windsor Spitfires. He was the 2nd best player in the draft and was drafted 37th by Windsor. He told teams he was not playing in the OHL, but when a team near his home (suburb of Detroit) drafted him, all of a sudden he signs on to play in the OHL for the consensus best team in the league.
So drafting players is not that easy when the player has all of the control. And everyone wonders why the best teams are the best every year.
Trading is the same way. Remember the Mike Brown trade. We were supposed to get Dan LaCosta from Owen Sound but he said I will not play for an American team. So, we get Weber and Birner, two good pickups, but we could have had LaCosta for three years following, if he plays an overage season.
But, newguy is right about taking flyers on players when you are stacked and the history of drafting in Saginaw. JM Rizk was not the best player available when he was drafted, but he was the best player that would commit to Saginaw. Other players drafted were that way too. Kitchener was stacked last year and could take a shot at Cam Fowler because you could say they didn't need him.
I guess I don't know the whole story with Asselin, if Saginaw was made to look terrible. He was informed if he came to Saginaw he would be the captain and Saginaw would work on a deal to a contending team in the East. He wanted Peterborough, but I heard he was not guaranteed anything. He showed up, played his heart out for us, and the deal was made to Oshawa. Doesn't sound to me like he didn't get anything promised to him. Maybe I don't know the whole story, but it looks like Saginaw did him right.
And what's the deal with Mursak. He was given an opportunity to win a championship with Belleville. Amazing to me how everyone bashed him for scoring a point a game last year, saying he wasn't playing well, and then he gets traded everyone bashes the trade. You can't have it both ways folks. He played well on a team that had really good players around him with Pyatt, O'Marra, etc. He was on a team of good players, scored decently, and everyone was bashing him. But, he wasn't making those around him better the way Pyatt did. Sorry if I ruffle feathers but he didn't make anyone better.
Torquato - off ice issues caused by poor decisions by the player led to Saginaw having to trade him. Player and family's fault not Saginaw's.
Platt - wanted out and deal made. End of story. Why does Saginaw look bad here?
Mancini was a con artist if you ask me. He was never going to return to Saginaw once he saw the roster for last year. He improved himself and his reputation by having a really good team in his last year. He would not have been a part of the organization last year anyway. I just wish it would have been done earlier so we weren't running around trying to find a GM and Coach in August.
But, the season starts in about a month. Are you ready?
