What does that mean? That's what they're paying the league to get it? We've got all those federal covid funds that no one can figure out how to spend... Sure seems like an easy way to buy a major event for the region

MidlandSpiritFan —-I thought showing your cards was what placing the bid was all about. Goslin is a very shrewd businessman, and I doubt the Spirit would bid if they didnt think they had an excellent chance of winning. But by no means do I think it’s a lock.

Showing your cards before the bids are due is what I was referring to.

Just a reminder that the deadline date for bids to be submitted is January 31st which is only 1 week away. Hopefully we’ll get more clarity on the details of Saginaw’s bid at that point.

Maybe the Spirit, the city, etc. don’t want to “show their cards”. The Saginaw county commisson voted on the 17th to commit to capital contributions towards the bid. You can find the info on the county commisson website and going to the link for the 17th

Thanks for sharing this. Notably missing: any approximation of an actual dollar amount, or what the planned improvements would be at the Dow. (Although these were at least hinted)

Thanks for sharing this. Notably missing: any approximation of an actual dollar amount, or what the planned improvements would be at the Dow. (Although these were at least hinted) This is only the agenda. Without seeing a copy of the minutes or attending the meeting, we don't know if they supported this and what support they are throwing behind it. I believe the county still has Federal ARPA funds left (maybe a million or two) and they could easily use those funds for this purpose. To me, the question will be permanent or temporary. I don't want this to be a temporary thing...if we're going to add suites/platforms or whatever, make them a permanent thing and sell them in future years. I still think we're the favorite to get it...once we won the lottery and got Misa I think the league is finally ready to bring this event to Michigan. If we don't get it this time, there's no reason to even apply in the future unless we built a new arena. I'm really hoping we get it!

I personally wasn't very impressed with the Soo's video. First, I've been there — the only thing they really have is the mall across the street. The parking is horrible, as you essentially have to park at the mall — just hope it's not busy when the time comes. Yes, they do have a hotel literally right next door, so I'll give them that.
All the activities they showed were winter activities, which is great, except even in the Soo, it's in the 70s in June when the Memorial Cup is held, so I don't think there will be a lot of curling or outdoor ice skating then. I also don't understand all the focus on players in the NHL — the Memorial Cup is about the team you have now, not the one you had 20 years ago. I don't think they had any current footage in that video — it's all from before COVID.
I will say, it's obvious who they feel their competition is though, considering the first part of the video is them scoring goals on Saginaw. lol.
I know there are a lot of doubters, but I think we will win the bid this year.

I know there are a lot of doubters, but I think we will win the bid this year. I thought the same thing when I watched it...all of the "within walking distance" was a shot at Saginaw for sure. I looked at a map and they do have 4 hotels within walking distance of the arena but I just don't know how much of an advantage that is since people will be driving to dinner and whatever else. I'm sure we're using Frankenmuth as a home base for people and it's a 15-20min drive to the Dow...hardly an inconvenience and if people want more convenience they can stay at the Ramada or any of the Tittabawassee hotels. The regionalism that we could provide would include: - Shuttle to the casino - Potential of Loons games - Golf...Soo doesn't have crap...we have Saginaw CC, Midland CC, Apple, Fortress...hockey guys love golf and that's a huge win for us there. - Children's Museum, Dow Museums, Bay City Riverfront - Pregame events at Morley Plaza and Jolt Park This thing's in the bag...unless it's totally FIFA style and we can't compete with bribes

Don’t forget Birch Run and the outlets. That will be a draw too.
